ME 130L The University of Texas at Austin Spring 2023 18455-18525 Walker Department of Mechanical Engineering Dr. Ben-Yakar ME 130L Experimental Fluid Mechanics Pre-Lab # 1 – Fluid Density, Viscosity, and Uncertainty Analysis Hand in at the beginning of your lab section. Name: _____________________________ TA Name: ____________________ Lab section day and time: ____________ Lab section unique #: ____________ Degree of completeness (for TA use) _____ 1_____2_____3 (3 for fully complete pre‐labs ) 1. Explain the purpose of the lab and summarize how you will measure the following parameters: volume, density, viscosity of water, K -constant in Equation (2) given in the lab handout, and viscosity of “unknown” liquids. 2. Under what conditions can you obtain an accurate measurement of fluid viscosity using a falling ball viscometer? Give the relevant non-dimensional parameter and its required value for these conditions. 3. How would you estimate the uncertainties for the volume and for the individual time measurements in this experiment? 4. Oil density is determined from a measurement of volume and mass. A volume of 350 ml is measured using a graduated cylinder with a scale resolution of 5 ml. The mass of the empty cylinder is measured to be 252 g and the mass of the filled cylinder is measured to be 541 g. Mass measurements are made using a scale with a resolution of 2 g. (a) What are the uncertainties for the volume and mass measurements? (b) Determine the oil density (in kg/m 3 ) and the uncertainty of this value using the standard propagation of uncertainty formula:

The viscosity of water can be determined from empirical correlations, such as Equation (3) given in the lab handout and shown next: ࠵? = ࠵? ⋅ 10 ! "#$ where, A = 2.414 x 10 -5 N-s/m 2 B = 247.8 K C = 140 K T = Temperature in K The uncertainty for this correlation (δμ) is ±2.5% of the resulting viscosity value. If temperature is measured to be 310 K, what is the viscosity of the water and the uncertainty for this viscosity?
