Dear future student, when working in a group there are a lot of dynamics that collide and mix. One of these is work ethic. Many people have different work ethics than others, and that’s okay. This has made some of the groups that I worked with difficult because I would want to plow through the work that we needed to do while other people in the group wanted to talk and delay the work. This was frustrating for me. I did not have a growth mindset about the group I was in. My go to way to solve this problem was to call people out on being slackers. This usually didn’t end well. Since then, I have learned that for me to convey my dislike for the work ethic of another individual in my group I had to make my statements “I” not “you”. When you create an “I” statement you convey the problem, but in a way that doesn’t attack the individual that you think is causing it. An example of this could be you saying to the group or the individual who is slowing everyone down “I don’t understand…” or “I’m going to start on this part while you continue this”. Depending on your situation the “I” statements may vary. When you make “I” statements you allow the group or the individual the opportunity to have a growth mindset. Something that I need to work on in a group setting is being more understanding of the individuals in the group. Empathy goes a long way. Especially when someone is struggling with the material or with external problems. Sometimes I don’t think that this is possible in some of the groups that I’ve been with, but that’s not very growth mindset of me. In every situation, even in school groups, we can improve ourselves and the people around us.
