Lecture Outline: Excretory System Functions à o osmoregulation : control of solute concentrations in the body; balance of water gain/loss; osmolarity is the number of solute particles per liter of solution o excretion: getting rid of potentially toxic nitrogenous wastes generated by breaking down proteins and nucleic acids Comparing solutions à o same concentration = isotonic or isoosmotic o NOT same concentration Solution with higher concentration = hypertonic or hyperosmotic solution Solution with lower concentration = hypotonic or hypoosmotic Comparative terms
If something (solute or water) is free to move between two solutions, it will move in such a way to bring concentrations of the two solutions closer to equal Hypotonic cell = shrivels up Hypertonic cell = explode Osmoconformers à o Most marine invertebrates are osmoconformers o Isoosmotic with environment o Maintain concentration of body fluids that is consistent with environment even if environment changes Osmoregulators à o Most vertebrates and a variety of invertebrates are osmoregulators o Maintain fairly constant internal osmolarity independent of environment
