Chapter 14 Assignment Questions 1. What is leadership? Discuss the differences between leaders and managers. Leaders and Managers may be defined similarly but they do not hold the same skills or duties. Leader 's guide and encourage others to do better for long term goals. While managers provide order and discipline to get a job done for the short term. Leadership is a skill developed by people in order to advise and influence others. 2. Discuss the leadership behaviors of “initiating structure” and “consideration”. Initiating structure is when a leader creates a system for those who follow. For example, a CEO of a company may provide a detailed plan of what needs to be done, who does what, and when it should be done. Consideration is when the leader provides concern and respect for its followers. For instance, certain job positions like counselors provide empathy and kindness towards others. 3. Discuss Fiedler’s Contingency Theory. Fielders ' Contingency Theory expresses how leaders must be put in positions that best fit their style of leading. This theory is based off traits the leader holds. For example, a leader who shows consideration should not be put in a position where their followers are seeking order and an authority figure. 4. Discuss the Path-Goal Theory. The path goal theory is a leadership philosophy that emphasizes the role of the leader in inspiring and guiding their followers to accomplish their objectives. Robert House first put forth the hypothesis in 1971, and it has since undergone revision and improvement. According to the theory, a leader's actions should be determined by the demands of their subordinates and the nature of the current assignment. According to the path goal theory, managers can choose amongst the four leadership philosophies of directive, supporting, participative, and achievement oriented. Giving explicit instructions and expectations to followers is a part of the directive style. The supportive style entails offering emotional support and demonstrating concern for followers' well-being. Participants in decision- making processes are involved in the participative style. 5. Discuss the Normative Decision Theory. The Normative Decision Theory is the study of guidelines for right action. This theory deals with the implications of the principles of comparative evaluation and choice among alternatives on an abstract level and in reference to particular types of decision situations.
It also involves the formulation and defense of both principles, such as proposed as rules that individuals or societies ought to or perhaps would want to follow. 6. Discuss charismatic and transformational leadership. Charismatic and Transformational can be related to initiating structure and consideration techniques. Charismatic involves the leader providing emotional support to its followers and given them the space to create that relationship between themselves. On the other hand, transformational provides structure for their followers in order for everyone to be on the same page.
