1 Organizational Structure Outline Rachel Miller University of Phoenix MGT/526 Dr. Leon Daniels, Jr. March 5, 2024
2 Demographics What are the organization’s current employee demographics (e.g., age, gender, ethnicity)? o The Home Depot employs 500,001 individuals. The workforce consists of 40% women and 60% men. The predominant ethnicity at The Home Depot is White, comprising 59% of the workforce. 19% of the employees are of Hispanic or Latino descent. 12% of the employees are Black or African American ( Zippia , 2023). o The most common age range of employees is 20-30 years at 53% ( Zippia , 2023). What was a recent change that affected a large group of employees or the organizational culture? o Home Depot was found to have unlawfully terminated an employee for refusing to remove "BLM" (Black Lives Matter) messaging from his work apron. The BLM movement was initiated following the murder of George Floyd. At a Home Depot store in New Brighton, Minnesota, multiple employees manually inscribed "BLM" on the company's recognizable orange aprons. Antonio Morales was terminated by the store (Maruf, 2024). How did the company handle it? o Although Home Depot expressed its disagreement with the ruling, the NLRB determined that the text on the aprons constituted a "protected concerted activity" aimed at protesting the racial injustice occurring at the store between August 2020 and February 2021. Employees reported instances of "racially discriminatory behavior" within the organization. Section 7 of the National Labor Relations Act safeguards employees' rights to wear and share items like buttons, pins, stickers, t- shirts, pamphlets, or other materials that convey messages on employment terms, unionization, and other protected topics. The NLRB determined that Home Depot violated the law by impeding employees' Section 7 rights. The Board determined that the business also illegally threatened workers who took part (Maruf, 2024). The ruling mandates the reinstatement of Morales and requires reimbursement for any lost earnings. Was the change handled ethically and what stands out as something to emulate in your future business endeavors? o I believe the situation was handled ethically. The NLRB was correct in its findings and in supporting the employee. However, the Home Depot itself disagreed with the findings, despite advocating having a zero-tolerance policy for retaliation or workplace harassment (Careers, 2024). o What stood out to me was that a company that advocates diversity and inclusion chose to fire an employee who voiced an opinion. As a consumer, it makes me weary to support companies that voice themselves as inclusive, yet try and smother their employees when they are open about their views.
3 Technology How does the company utilize technology in day-to-day business? o Home Depot heavily relies on technology in its daily activities to simplify procedures, enhance customer interactions, handle inventory, and boost overall effectiveness (5 Technologies Changing How We Shop, n.d.). What types of technology are used? o Point of Sale (POS) systems to streamline transactions effectively. These technologies are commonly used with inventory management software to guarantee immediate updates on stock levels and simplify the checkout process. o Inventory management technology to monitor inventory levels in its stores and warehouses. This ensures products are consistently available to fulfill client demand. RFID technology can accurately monitor things along the supply chain (The Home Depot Inc. - Digital Transformation Strategies, 2024). o In-store navigation via mobile apps or in-store kiosks that help customers navigate the aisles and locate products within the store. This can improve the shopping experience and reduce frustration for customers trying to find specific items (The Home Depot Inc. - Digital Transformation Strategies, 2024). o E-commerce and online presence that offers customers the ability to browse and purchase products online for home delivery or in-store pickup. This involves sophisticated e-commerce platforms, secure payment processing systems, and logistics solutions to manage online orders effectively (The Home Depot Inc. - Digital Transformation Strategies, 2024). o Staff Training and Development where technology is utilized to enhance staff training and development initiatives. This may involve online training modules, interactive simulations, and knowledge management systems to ensure personnel possess the essential skills and information to properly serve clients. How does a change of technology affect the organization? o Changes in technology can have a significant impact on Home Depot in several ways. It can both disrupt and benefit Home Depot's operations. By embracing technological advancements and effectively integrating them into its business processes, Home Depot can improve efficiency, enhance the customer experience, and maintain a competitive edge in the retail industry.
