1. Conflict theorists see society as consisting of groups competing for power (including money). How do the groups related to college basketball and football programs compete for funding? Within college basketball and football programs, these groups compete for funding through different avenues. Administrators and coaches typically control the distribution of resources, prioritizing things such as facilities, staff salaries, and recruiting efforts. Student athletes compete for funding based on their performance and contribution even though they don’t have control over profits. Supporters such as fans, contribute to funding through ticket sales and merch purchases. This competition for funding reflects the interests of stakeholders within college sports programs, all seeking to advance their own goals while navigating financial constraints. 2. In general, are the costs, resources, and rewards of college football and basketball programs distributed fairly? They aren't distributed fairly. Coaches and administrators often get large salaries and perks, while student athletes, who do a lot of the work and bring in a lot of the money, usually only get scholarships for tuition, room, and board. This isn't fair, especially since many athletes come from low-income backgrounds. Also, most programs run at a loss, so student fees end up covering a big part of the costs, making it even more unfair. Fixing this needs policy changes to ensure athletes get fair pay and support, and that benefits are shared more equally. 3. Should some or all student basketball and football athletes receive salaries for playing? Why? Yes, some or all student basketball and football athletes should receive salaries for playing. They put in a lot of time and effort, and their performances bring in a ton of money for their schools. Scholarships might cover some costs, but athletes from low-income backgrounds still struggle financially. Paying them would help address this and make sure they're fairly compensated for their hard work and contributions to their teams. 4. Do you think it is fair for some student athletes to benefit financially from the use of their “name, image, or likeness”? Giving student athletes the chance to profit from their "name, image, or likeness" is fair. They work hard and bring value to their sports programs, so they should have the
opportunity to earn money from endorsements or other opportunities. This can also help them financially, especially if they come from backgrounds with less money.
