HIS 100 Module Four Activity Template: Bias in Primary Sources Anthony Calabrese Locate an additional primary source relevant to your historical event. Use it and the primary source you identified in a previous module to answer the questions below. Replace the bracketed text with your responses. Source One Conduct source analysis on a primary source relevant to your historical event. Climate Change -Chernobyl Attempt to write the APA style citation for your first primary source and include a link to it. You will not be penalized for incorrect format. https://cpb-us-w2.wpmucdn.com/campuspress.yale.edu/dist/5/322/files/2013/12/Zibtsev- Oliver-GoldammerWildfire2011_paper.pdf Wildfires Risk Reduction From Forests Contaminated by Radionuclides: A Case Study of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant Exclusion Zone Respond to the following questions: Who authored or created the primary source? o The article is multi-authored from a group effort of the National University of Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine, Sergly Zibtev, Mykhaylo Petrenko and Olexandr Borsuk. What was the author’s position in society at the time the primary source was created? o The Co-authors are administrators and professionals that worked in colleges and the military. When was the primary source created? o This was written in May 2011. Where was the primary source created, released, or publicized? o The souce was shown in Ukraine near the Chernobyl site and was distributed worldwide. Who was the intended audience for the primary source? o The expected to tell the government official, scientists, and the numerous federal agencies in order to make additional procedures and actions to block wildfires and in case of wildfires to contain it. Why was the primary source created? o The region nearby Chernobyl still had radionuclides. There was a wave of wildfires, the radionuclides were still present in the atmosphere over the countries that were examining it. This ensued in people judging that if the fires were not put out the circumstances would get worse, The intention of the research was to establish what the 1
wildfires and climate change did to the affected areas and what could be done to diminish the affect. Whose perspective(s) is presented in the source? o In my opinion, this is from a scientific viewpoint. Source Two Conduct a source analysis on a primary source relevant to your historical event. Attempt to write the APA style citation for your second primary source and include a link to it. You will not be penalized for incorrect format. Newman-Thacker, F., & Turnbull, L. (2021). Investigating the drivers of the unprecedented Chernobyl Power Plant Wildfire in April 2020 and its effects on 137Cs dispersal. Natural Hazards , 109 (2), 1877–1897. https://doi.org/10.1007/s11069-021-04902-7 Respond to the following questions: Who authored or created the primary source? o The gentlemen who wrote the articles are workers at the Dept of Geography at the University of Durham in the United Kingdom. When was the primary source created? o July 3, 2021 Where was the primary source created, released, or publicized? o This was publicized in the United Kingdom and created in Chernobyl Who was the intended audience for the primary source? o The scientists in the community and anyone else interested. Why was the primary source created? o I feel that it was established to connect a correlation between the exceptional wildfires that affected climate change and what influences the fire had on sources of food or water resources in the sections downwind. The findings clarified that the fires could have theoretically emitted harmful elements into the atmosphere. Whose perspective(s) is presented in the source? o I believe this it is a historical and scientific source. Both Sources Analyze the primary sources relevant to your historical event for the presence of bias. By analyzing the sources there is a worry for the atmosphere and the safety of the people of Chernobyl. This can be perceived as a political perspective as they were supposed to focus on 2
political regulations that could sustain the problems. The 1 st source is biased more toward the ecosystem while the 2 nd one is about the welfare of the use of food and water. Compare how your historical event is represented in your primary sources. The sources show that Chernobyl was the leading cause of the radiation. They also show how climate change was a key part of the climate change on the radionuclides that were emitted throughout the detonations. Since the detonation of radioactivity in that zone is the main cause of why it is still there, Climate Change is to be blamed for the radiation quantities in the adjacent regions. 3
