HIS 100 Module One Activity Template: Project Topic Exploration
Anthony Calabrese
You must pick a topic from the Research Topics Lists in the Library Research Guide. While it is a good idea
to choose your topic early, you may change it until the next module. Replace the bracketed text below
with your responses. Support your responses with specific details and examples.
Identify the topic you chose to explore:
My topic of choice is Chernobyl.
https://libguides.snhu.edu/c.php?g=1184812&p=8902723
Explain what you already know about the chosen topic based on your personal history or experiences.
Going into this topic, all I was aware of Chernobyl was a nuclear power plant that self-destructed in the
mid-1980s, and they had to evacuate people that were within 20 miles.
I did know that it happened in
the U.S.S.R.
Describe the beliefs, assumptions, and values you have related to the topic you chose.
I know that it has involved many generations of families while the disaster affected women
having children by causing birth defects in babies and a significant amount of the population had
a cancer diagnosis. Having long-term effects on people’s health is spoken about to this day.
In my opinion, this could have been averted given the fact that the operators of the plant did not
follow the appropriate procedures and safety practices for shutting down.
I feel that the failure
in conviction was from egotism from governance at the plant and the obliviousness of the
employees.
It was something that no one was following procedures and policies set forth on
such a major operation.
E
xplain why this topic is relevant to current events or to modern society.
The
In my area, we used to have the Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant.
Having this in our area, was a worry
due to the possibility of it exploding. Just like Chernobyl, Indian Point could not withstand an
earthquake.
Chernobyl was important for the reason that expected that the radiation level in the town was not safe
for some time.
The ecosystems in Chernobyl were possibly contaminated from the ground to the
drinking water and became unusable.
We have an energy crisis on the horizon unless we do something
about it.
Considering the reason, the explosion permits us to allow the safety guidelines at nuclear power plants,
the Chernobyl explosion has shown climate change that continues today, it affected both the plant and
animal existence inside the seclusion region and has grown due to the lack of human existence.
