Spanish 120- Cultural Discussion 3

1. What have you learned about " el personalismo
?"
Through my experiences, I have learned
that establishing a personal relationship with Spanish-speaking patients is vital before engaging
with them professionally as a nurse. Ensuring that they are open and receptive to your care is
essential.
2. How could you improve that your Latino patients feel trust (la confianza) towards you?
I
research their nationality and perspective on care and learning to establish trust with patients.
During conversations, I strive to foster a connection by discussing their family and personal
interests. For my Spanish-speaking patients, I have found that speaking with friends and family
at the bedside can help bridge gaps and encourage trust. I rely on my resources and language
facilitator when language barriers arise to ensure effective communication.
3. Mention one point that you feel it is useful to know.
It was enlightening to learn about
psychotic disorganization. In my recent experience working in the ER, I have encountered
numerous patients with this issue. Some Spanish-speaking patients would present with altered
mental status (AMS) despite being able to speak English before. They would refuse to
communicate in English or have nonsensical conversations that were difficult to comprehend,
even in Spanish. This passage has provided me with a greater understanding of these situations
and how best to approach them in the future.
