Running Head: MODULE ONE JOURNAL
CJ-550 Module One Journal
For the project this semester I have decided to investigate the Florida Re-Entry Subdivision. This
subdivision is particularly interesting to me and I believe I will be able to become interested in
this topic. It’s important that inmates are able to attempt to become valuable members of society
after they are released from corrections. The rehabilitative rational for punishment is one that is
beneficial and is backed by evidence. In Florida, it has been pointed out that the average score on
the education level test for new inmates was 6.6 (The Florida Senate, 2008). Anyone under that
education level is required to take a 150-hour literacy training program (The Florida Senate,
2008). This allows inmates to further their educational career and become valued members of
society upon their release.
In recent years, the Florida Re-Entry Subdivision has developed budgetary constraints.
This creates a lack of funding for the program which in return allows for inadequate staffing,
high rate of inmate recidivism. I believe throughout the milestones and the final paper I will be
able to successfully assess the strengths, weaknesses, threats, opportunities of this subdivision.
With this, I will be able to offer recommendations in order to improve this important subdivision.
Overall, I believe the Florida Re-Entry Subdivision allows for successful inmate rehabilitation,
which in return allows individual and community perception to favor the criminal justice system
in a positive way.
