Fernando Palacios Dr. Baird Hist. P118 Spanish Flu Assignment 1. In the first film, it talks about how the Spanish flu greatly impacted the people of Philadelphia. It started when the city held a parade even when warned not to because the local health director approved it. From here everyone was getting sick and roughly fifteen thousand people died from this flu. Hospitals, graves, and cemeteries were being overfilled. Newspapers were holding back on the truth on just how dangerous the flu really was. Despite so many people dying and everything closing, some newspapers stated that this was not a “public health measure. 2. In spring 1919, over five million people worldwide suffered from the Spanish flu. On April 3 rd , President Wilson suffered an illness attack and it is believed to be because he had caught the disease. After reviewing the documents that his doctor had written, it stated that President Wilson showed many symptoms that were attributed to the disease. He also wasn’t the same when he went back to negotiating as one of the symptoms affect the mentality. Although he wanted to tell everyone that he was sick, the public was told that it was just a cold. In October 1919, President Wilson suffered stroke that resulted him being partially paralyzed on one side of his body and it was believed that the Spanish flu was the main factor on why he suffered a stroke. 3. In spring 1918, the Germans had the advantage and were able to break through Allied lines but were suddenly stopped. Over five hundred thousand German troops suffered from the flu and it stopped them from finishing their attack. Then the Allies tried to strike back but they

also were affected by the flu. Over two hundred thousand Americans died of the Spanish flu and it hindered their ability to fight back. The draft was cancelled because they did not want soldiers to be grouped up in camps. Meanwhile, the newspapers called the Spanish flu, just another ordinary flu but this obviously was not the case.
