Jeliza Garcia Professor Ó Broin ENG1100-097 October 19,2022 (Peer editing) As more history comes into light about certain artifacts and where they were originally made. It sparks a debate on whether they should be returned to their original country. It is known that museums collect foreign goods such as artifacts, paintings, etc. A big part of this is museums and how they acquire the artifacts or loot. Artifacts or loot help people be inform of the country and being able to understand about that time period it was made. Every country has a museum that either shows their own history or foreign history and with that they have to have loot or artifact from the place they are mentioning /One of the biggest museums are going through this debate right now which is the British museum. It is considered on how the artifact or loot is going to back to the country damage could be done due to how fragile it is and it’s also expensive to travel. The artifacts or loot should be returned to the origin country due to not only being part of their history but also culture. A lot of the countries have made repatriation petitions with hopes that they have back their history and culture but most of them have been denied. Some of these museums have gotten a loan with the artifact/loot they took with the intention of it being returned. One of the most
known right now one of their biggest debates is for the British museums for The Elgin Marbles which is from the Greek Parthenon. The Greeks had requested for a repatriation in 1983 but was denied. It is said that Parthenon was left for over 100 years before Thomas Bruce, and he gained permission to purchase and transport the remaining statues to Britain. The other part of the pieces of Parthenon is in Greece. Some of these artifacts and loots were snatched due to colonial power they had at that time. It could be said that having it in another country is good due to sometimes the people from other parts of the world can learn about that country but if the country is asking for it back shouldn’t you give it back to them? There is a history of robbing, conquest, and tyranny over these artifacts. Should Museums really keep art and artifacts that was stolen, looted during war or during colonial rule? Its just basic morally to returned it due to culture objects belong together with the culture that created it. It should be put in the origin country museums as museums are there to for education in heritage, culture and history. The artifacts are a source to understand better the country history, religious political and etc. Some examples is the Egyptian Rosetta Stone which is in The British museum or the Gree k “Nike of Samothrace” at Louve in Paris.
