Fernando Palacios Dr. Baird Hist. P118 Lynching in America Assignment Anthony Ray Hinton recalls on how he lost thirty years of his life due to a false accusation. He said that it all began when two white officers falsely accused him of kidnapping and shooting someone. He stated that the officers did not care whether it was him or not, but that Anthony was for sure going to go to jail. He was found guilty and was sentenced to death row. He could have been set free earlier if the Attorney General re-examined the bullets that was used as evidence against him, but the Attorney General did not want to and Anthony ended up serving his full time. After his time served, he was finally pardoned by the Supreme Court Justices. Anthony says that the worst part of losing all those years, was losing all that time he could have spent with his mother, who passed away. Doria Dee Johnson tells the story of her great-great-grandfather Anthony Crawford and how he got lynched. She says that one day when he went to into town to sell his cotton, he got into an altercation with a white man and was sent to jail for it. The town had heard about Anthony Crawford sticking up for himself and went on to do their own “justice”. They beat him and dragged him across town. They hanged him where everyone could see and shot him a tremendous amount of times. After that, the people of the town, threatened Crawford’s family to leave. Doria states that they were “chased out of the South”, leaving their land of 427 acres. On the 100 th anniversary of his death, his family revealed a marker in the town honoring him, letting everyone know his story.
