P117 Film Assignment The Civil War Death and the Civil War The video talks about the unbelievable number of deaths that happened during the Civil War which was hundreds of thousands of people which would translate to about seven million people killed today and how they dealt with so many deceased. The video also gave scenarios that soldiers faced during the Civil War like J.R. Montgomery. While fatally wounded, Montgomery wrote a letter to his father explaining his current situation. Montgomery died after sustaining a fatal shoulder injury caused by a piece of shell. His family was not able to find his body and thus were not able to fulfill his wish of laying him to rest with his mother and brothers. Before the Civil War, America did not have national cemeteries, no aid to help suffering families, no resources to help bury all the deceased, etc. The Civil War made America and its systems take more responsibility on the people who basically gave them their power and those who gave their life defending that power. The video mentions the state and government owing more to the people because the Civil War showed that people would die for their government systems, so it was up to them to take that responsibility for its soldiers. Impact on Women The video talks about the many roles women took on during the Civil War and the lasting impact it had for them. The video mentions that before the Civil War, women could not really do anything independently and how they were basically “second class citizens”. Since the men had

Fernando Palacios Dr. Baird Hist. P117 Film Assignment to go to war, that meant that women had to take over jobs that the men had. Women had jobs like nursing the wounded men. This helped Dorothea Dix create the U.S. Sanitary Commission which created jobs for over 21,000 women to aid in the war effort. Some women also fought in the war, but they had to disguise themselves as men in order to do so. Even though after the war some women went back to the way things were, the women’s movement certainly helped women become more independent and show that they can easily be just as equal in the roles taken on by men. Sullivan Ballou Letter The video is about a union soldier, Sullivan Ballou, writing to his wife a week before the battle of Bull Run. In the letter, he tells her how much he loves her and how he hopes to see her again. He also mentions that he has no regrets about fighting for his country. I could not imagine what both the soldier and his wife must have felt. The soldier knowing that he may never see his wife again and vice versa, is something I think that no couple ever wants to go through. I do admire that he was determined and wanted to fight for his country and even accepted the fact that he may die on the battlefield which is something I do not think that I would be able to come to terms with. It is sad to know that this was a situation that many families faced during the Civil War.
