US POLICY AT THE BEGINNING OF WWI Instructions: answer the questions about the speech below. Source: Woodrow Wilson, Message to Congress, August 4, 1914. The effect of the war upon the United States will depend upon what American citizens say and do. Every man who really loves America will act and speak in the true spirit of neutrality, which is the spirit of impartiality and fairness and friendliness to all concerned. The spirit of the nation in this critical matter will be determined largely by what individuals and society and those gathered in public meetings do and say, upon what newspapers and magazines contain, upon what ministers utter in their pulpits, and men proclaim as their opinions upon the street. The people of the United States are drawn from many nations, and chiefly from the nations now at war. It is natural and inevitable that there should be the utmost variety of sympathy and desire among them with regard to the issues and circumstances of the conflict. Some will wish one nation, others another, to succeed in the momentous struggle. It will be easy to excite passion and difficult to allay it. Woodrow Wilson wishes America to remain neutral in WWI .First, he believes that true love for America involves acting and speaking in terms of neutrality, which he defines as impartiality, fairness, and friendliness to all concerned parties. He also acknowledges the diverse origins of the American people, who come from many nations, including those engaged in the war. As a result, it is natural for them to have a wide range of sympathy and desires regarding the conflict's outcome. Wilson fears that these varied sentiments could easily ignite passions and intensify divisions within the United States. By maintaining neutrality, he hopes to prevent internal conflicts and promote national unity with everyone. Explain why and how Wilson wishes America to remain neutral. As for the possibility of remaining fully neutral in a conflict like WWI, I believe based on this lesson it can be argued that it is challenging to do so. While neutrality can be maintained for a time period, as the war progresses and its effects become more developed and far reached , it becomes increasingly difficult to stay uninvolved in this case. Economic, political, and humanitarian considerations may eventually compel a nation to take a stance or join the conflict. Do you think it is possible to stay fully neutral in a conflict like WWI? Why or why not?
The sinking of the Lusitania WHAT HAPPENED? US RESPONSE The U.S. condemned the attack and demanded Germany stop unrestricted submarine warfare. Germany temporarily halted the practice but later resumed it. AMERICA’S PATH TO WAR Instructions: Fill in the timeline by clicking on each date and write down key facts. 191 5 The Zimmerman Telegram The U.S. was outraged by the proposal for a German-Mexican alliance against the U.S., which led to increased support for entering the war. Soon after, President Wilson asked Congress to declare war on Germany, and the United States officially entered WWI. 19 17 How did BOTH of these events cause the US to abandon isolationism & go to war? The sinking of the Lusitania demonstrated that American lives and interests were not safe, even if the U.S. remained neutral. The loss of American lives in the attack shocked the American public, and Germany's continuation of unrestricted submarine warfare further threatened American civilians and commerce. The Zimmerman Telegram showed that Germany was actively seeking to undermine U.S. security by proposing an alliance with Mexico against the United States. This revelation increased the perception that Germany was a direct threat to the U.S. and that remaining neutral would not protect the country from potential harm.

AMERICA’S PATH TO WAR Instructions: Analyze the speech below Source: Woodrow Wilson, Message to Congress, April 17, 1917. When I addressed the Congress on the 26th of February last, I thought that it would suffice to assert our neutral rights with arms, our right to use the seas against unlawful interference, our right to keep our people safe against unlawful violence. But armed neutrality, it now appears, is impracticable. The world must be made safe for democracy . Its peace must be planted upon the tested foundations of political liberty. We have no selfish ends to serve. We desire no conquest, no dominion. We see no indemnities for ourselves, no material compensation for the sacrifices we shall freely make. In Woodrow Wilson's speech to Congress on April 17, 1917, his message is that the United States can no longer maintain armed neutrality, and the nation must enter the war to help make the world safe for democracy and ensure lasting peace. Wilson justifies joining the war by first acknowledging that he firstly believed it would be enough for the U.S. to assert its neutral rights and protect its people from unlawful violence. However, he now realizes that armed neutrality is impracticable, as it cannot effectively safeguard the United States or promote global stability. What is Wilson’s message in this speech? He emphasizes the importance of making the world safe for democracy, stating that peace must be built upon the foundations of political liberty. Wilson also highlights the selflessness of the United States' decision to enter the war, as the country does not seek conquest, dominion, indemnities, or material compensation for its sacrifices. Instead, the U.S. aims to contribute to the establishment of a more democratic, peaceful, and stable world order. How does he justify joining the war?

BRING IT TOGETHER! Instructions: Write a letter or diary entry discussing America’s entry into WWI. Dear Diary, One can at least say that the past few months have been vicious. The United States had officially entered World War I, a decision that brought enormous and uncertain consequences. Our initial neutrality seemed like an appropriate stance, but it became increasingly clear that our security and the future of democracy could not be guaranteed by standing aside. The sinking of the Lusitania and the disturbing revelations about the Zimmerman Telegram only strengthen our resolve to join the fight and defend democracy around the world. I also heard today about the Selective Service Act, which calls for young Americans to enlist in the military. While I understand the need for a strong and ready military, I can't help but feel conflicted about forcing our young people through the horrors of war. I pray for their safety and courage as they undertake this threatening journey. As we move forward, I find myself thinking about various aspects of the war and its impact on our nation. The US Expeditionary Force, commanded by General John J. Pershing, will soon be deployed to fight alongside our European allies. I am proud of their bravery and dedication, and hope they can make a meaningful difference on the battlefield. Harlem Hellfighters, an African-American regiment, also caught my attention. Despite the racism and inequality they face, these brave men are willing to fight for a country that doesn't always treat them fairly. Their service speaks to their patriotism and commitment to justice. 4 Minute Men is another intriguing development in this wartime. These patriotic volunteers speak out and mobilize their support for the war effort, lifting morale and fostering solidarity in our community. It's amazing how a few minutes can have such a deep impact on people's morale. Finally, I hear more and more about intelligence and sedition laws. These INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING: → why America joined the war → Your thoughts on the Selective Service Act → At least THREE of the following terms: American Expeditionary Force Harlem Hellfighters Wobblies 4 Minute Men Espionage & Sedition Acts
