Analysis: Section #3 of Native common traits that elicited harm states that from the beginning Europeans and Native Americans are incompatible and therefore Europeans look down on them and took advantage of them. The section begins by stating the Native Americans religious beliefs and how they differ from the Europeans. For example, Native Americans believed in multiple gods and Europeans believed in only one. The Europeans did not accept the belief in multiple “false” gods and thought of it as being a sin of “idolatry.” Secondly, Europeans concept of private property and ownership of land differed from the Native Americans. This made an unfavorable evaluation to the Native Americans and granted Europeans the rights to control and take ownership of land. Europeans then realized the control they had over the Native Americans and started taking advantage of them. When in reality the Native Americans had the upper hand and could have easily used their resources like namely, gold, labor and land to their advantage. Therefore, leaving the Native Americans religion and beliefs with no chance against them, having no notion of property and ownership left them exploited which led to the Europeans ultimately having notions of superiority over them. Evaluation: I believe this writers thesis to be credible that Europeans look down on and took advantage of Native Americans. This writer states facts and gives examples of each instance as well as history speaking for itself. We all know that Native Americans were treated very badly by the Europeans “discovering” the Americas. The writer gives facts and insight of what life was like and how the Native Americans were treated. One instance being the ownership of lands and how Europeans took advantage of Native Americans and how they didn’t understand proprietorship and ultimately took land from them. Which led to the superiority of the Europeans.
