Liam Dwyer The Roaring 20s 1.Describe the government’s role in the national economy in the 1920s. The 1920’s was a time filled with tariffs, the US government wanted to protect domestic industry and they passed high tariffs as a wall to keep foreign products from being bought. Tariffs such as the Hawley Smoot tariff caused the illusion of prosperity in the american economy, but behind all that prosperity, the US farmers were losing money due to the high tariffs. The Dawes plan was also created during this time and it was the government's plan to get its war debts repaid, which also placed alot of financial strain on Europe. 2.Discuss the resurgence of Nativism and its effect on the American culture! There was an enormous amount of Nativism in the 20s, the US government passed acts such as the immigration act of 1924 and the chinese exclusion act in order to drastically reduce the number of immigrants coming into the country. The KKK (White Supremacist Group)achieve their highest number of members during this time, and the KKK existed in every state in the United States. Nativism can also be seen through regular people, an example is the sacco and vanzetti case in which two men were convicted and sentenced to death for a crime they didn't commit, basically just for being Italian 3.The decade of the 1920s is a classic juxtaposition of the old and the new. Discuss the contrast in American society in the 20s. The contrasting elements of the 1920s were everywhere, this was the time of the battle between the creationists and the evolutionists, on whether our children should be taught the teachings of darwin or the teachings of the bible, for example the scopes trial was a case on whether a teacher could teach evolution in a county were only creationism could be taught. The fundamentalists and the modernists also conflicted during this time, whether the historical and religious truth of the bible should be taken or just the religious side or no religion at all. Women and blacks became empowered during this time as well compared to a decade ago, blacks moved north and had a renaissance of sorts, while women got jobs and began to go against old social norms.
