Saint Melania the Younger Biography The saint I have chosen is Saint Melania the Younger. Saint Melania, also known as Melanie, was born in Rome c. 383, and died December 31, 439. She was brought to the world by wealthy, Christian parents Valerius and Albina Publicola. At the age of 14, she was to marry her paternal cousin, Valerius Pinianus. After having two of their children die at childbirth, she and her husband converted to Christianity. Soon after her father passed, Melania inherited their wealth and spent it wisely. She had used it to free about 8,000 slaves and shared it with the poor. Melania and Valerius traveled many places in their existence. Melania endowed monasteries in Egypt, Syria, and Palestine and aided churches and monasteries in Europe. Shortly after escaping the barbarous invasions, Melania, Valerius, and Albina fled to Tagaste in Numidia in the year 410. In the year 417, they all made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land and settled at Jerusalem. In Jerusalem, Melania became a good friend of St. Jerome. Following the death of her mother in 431 and her husband in 432, Melania attracted disciples to her solitary way of life and she built a convent, for which she was an Abbess until her death on December 31, 439. The life of St. Melania reminds us of the fleeting character of earthly wealth. We should strive to emulate her use of wealth as well as talents to further the cause of Christ.

In relation to Saint Melania the younger, I too, would like to help out others in need. She seemed to be loved by many for her actions. I would like to be remembered as she was. Melania’s feast date is December 31, which is also my birthday. From Mélanie, the French form of the Latin name Melania, derived from Greek meaning "black, dark". This was the name of a Roman saint who gave all her wealth to charity in the 5th century. The meaning of her name i can relate to because most of my friends say i have a dark soul. Although it is something they believe, I would like to prove to them that I do not have a dark, black soul. I will do this by following her footsteps in giving to the poor and helping others in great need. She also remained faithful to her Christian faith which I plan to do this as well. Melania had many talents to further the cause of Christ which she implied and impacted many people’s life.
