https://www.nytimes.com/2019/01/08/opinion/green-new-deal.html Green New Deal In The New York Times newspaper, Thomas L. Friedman posts an opinion titled “The Green New Deal Rises Again” and has a caption under the title of the post saying “It was a good idea that didn’t catch on in 2007. Now we’re running out of time.” This article was posted on the 8th of January 2019. The message this post is meant to project is that “A Green New Deal movement in the words of Friedman “ is a strategy for American national security, national resilience, natural security and economic leadership in the 21st century.” Friedman is arguing that “A Green New Deal” would make America “healthier, wealthier, more innovative, more energy secure, more respected — and weaken petro-dictators across the globe.” This would be achieved by making the world a cleaner place, using things that will not create climate change such as using fossil fuels, and being energy efficient. Thomas Friedman is a foreign affairs Op-Ed columnist who joined the newspaper “New York Times” in 1981. Being the author of seven amazing books, he won a total of three Pulitzer Prizes. One of his books “From Beirut to Jerusalem” even won a national book award.
His argument is based on providing problems that are going on currently and suggesting what he would do as a solution to fix them and he wants the people of America that might disagree with this “A Green New Deal” and those who fully support it to listen to him. His reasoning of writing to this audience is that he wants to convince those who disagree with it, that it is an important concept and solution to a lot of America’s issues. This “deal” is mainly associated with the democratic party, but he attempts to reach the right conservative party by saying that he wants to “recast green as geostrategic, capitalistic, economical, innovative and patriotic.” He is trying to reach people of all ages and parties so that collectively this “deal” can be passed. In the text, he says “to achieve scale, though, my view was that a Green New Deal had to be embraced by more than liberals. You had to reach conservatives and even climate deniers”, clearly stating he wants a wide range of audience. He is responding to his 2007 column on The New York Times that discusses what he thought of a Green New Deal back then. Friedman uses sources in his text to show the necessity of A Green New Deal because of the severity of the Earth’s current state. The articles, sources, and information he provides are all trustworthy and reliable due to the origin of the information. They are government websites that list the information he gives as research. Since The New York Times newspaper contains liberal bias, this article fits perfectly into this newspaper. The author of this article is not the only author who provides bias in this newspaper, but the whole New York Times is full of liberal ideals and posts and not as many conservative based opinion posts or news articles. The author is advocating from the democratic liberal side as he discusses having to convince the conservatives to vote for this “deal”.
The author uses an enthusiastic and slightly condescending tone in his post and talks very personally. His content is full of words, phrases, and resources that will lure liberals, conservatives, and people of all ages. The only image he displays is a technician who is watching turbines at a wind farm. This image is just to point to the use of electrical energy that doesn’t harm the environment. His post’s layout and design are very simple and to the point. The choice of words and tone attracts different audiences from different categories.
