For this week's assignment, the topic that I chose was "zones of regulation." It is something that we implemented at the school I work at. The teacher I work with uses these zones to help our students understand their emotions and learn how to regulate them. Over the summer, she proposed a room become a calming room for our students in the self-contained unit. These students have a range of things, from autism to behavioral disabilities. It can make it harder for them to regulate their emotions. So once approved, the teacher and I began creating the "Calming room" separated into four different zones. Red zone is when they are angry, fighting, etc. There are only gross motor activities in this zone to get them to become a little calmer. From there, they can move to the yellow zone. This zone has manipulatives or fidgets to help them regulate and become calmer. From here, they can then move to the green zone. It is where we want them to end up. This zone has more manipulatives, a radio with headphones, and other fun items to reward them for getting to this zone. There is also a blue zone. The blue zone is when they are worried, sick, or sad. Each zone provides the students with tools on what they can do to move out of the zone and end up back in the green zone. From there, they can then be able to get back to class. I based it on an email to my work suggesting some changes for the assignment. The suggestions I made would be to incorporate this type of room in each school in our district. Doing this, we hope that we can begin helping students county-wide learn how to regulate their emotions and remain in their learning environment without disruption to others. I want to take the assignment and draft it more with my teacher and principal to possibly get this email to become a real thing other than an assignment. With that, I would hope that it would be read by the Superintendent of schools and the board one day. We can't change the world in one day, but one day at a time, we could change the world. It starts with the students.
