Courses Renate Sander-Regier Online discussions information and guidelines Environmental Studies, University of Ottawa Introduction Online discussions are a meaningful and respectful exchange of ideas, perspectives, and experiences in response to discussion prompts and questions. Please note your participation in online discussions is optional you are free to participate in online discussion for your enrichment and learning you will not be graded on your participation in the online discussions. The role of the teaching team We look forward to reading your contributions to the discussions. These are your conversations, and we will participate only when we feel we can make a meaningful contribution for example: providing additional information, answering a question, filling a gap, etc. For beneficial participation in online conversations Substance of your participation Participation in the online conversations should reflect a certain investment of effort and commitment. That means solid and significant responses to the initial discussion question and prompt thoughtful and sensitive replies to other students. Substantial responses involve writing in complete and grammatically accurate sentences please o minimize your use of abbreviations o avoid writing in all caps (all caps = yelling) o use point form strategically and not too often using proper language providing bibliographical details or hyperlinks for external information sources if you use them, to enable others to access the information source if they wish o no particular reference style is required.
Courses Renate Sander-Regier Tone of your participation This virtual classroom is a place that encourages polite and courteous conversation including safe expression of personal views and perspectives considerate responses respectful disagreement good-natured challenging and defending of opinions all in the spirit of open and meaningful learning. Length of your contributions Here are some general guidelines for preparing your contributions: response to the initial discussion question/prompt: 100-300 words (if you feel a need to write more because the topic is important to you, feel free to write more, but please no more than 500 words) reply to other students: min. 50 words (approx. 2 sentences) Timing of your participation Please respond to the initial discussion prompt as early as possible to give others time to respond to you, and to enable conversations to evolve. That being said, some discussions may be so compelling and dynamic that they could continue over the course of weeks; don't hesitate to continue participating in those conversations.
