The athletic departments of these schools more often than not bring in much more money than they spend. Those student-athletes work hard and perform to bring in that money and should be able to reap the rewards of their hard work. The bigger athletic programs that are spending this type of money still end up with a budget surplus even after this massive spending. Take the University of Texas, my favorite school when it comes to athletics, for example. Their football program alone brings in so much money that it funds the other, less profitable athletic programs. Then the remaining surplus of funds goes back to the University. So not only is the football program covering its own spending without taking money from other departments, it's actually giving money to other departments as well (Laky 2022). The more universities spend on their athletic programs, the better the experience is for the student-athletes which will entice more high-profile athletes to attend that school. This will keep the program successful and profitable making the massive spending simply an investment. Despite having over $225 million in operating expenditures during the 2021-2022 athletic year, The University of Texas Athletic Department still reported a surplus of over $14 million (University of Texas Athletics 2023). Sean O'Meara Posted Oct 22, 2023 11:40 AM Hi Tim, You made a great point that many of these programs produce a surplus of revenue that can be used for other departments. Therefore, if they have the money to spend on nutrition for these student athletes and help their performance, it will only lead to a larger profit for the university. The example you used with the University of Texas helps to put the UCLA nutrition situation in to perspective.
