The Joint Commission emphasizes a wide range of tools to reinforce patient safety and high-quality care in healthcare institutions. According to Johnson
and Sollecito (2020), these tools cover a wide range of methods, such as PDSA cycles, TJC patient safety event taxonomy, Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), and root cause analysis (RCA). These tools function as preventative measures to guarantee ongoing enhancement of quality. Using root cause analysis (RCA), for example, organizations can identify the
underlying causes of errors or unfavorable events and implement targeted strategies to prevent recurrences. By foreseeing possible system or process
failures, FMEA enables healthcare organizations to reduce risks before they influence patient care. Similar to this, the PDSA cycle promotes ongoing improvements in patient safety and care delivery by facilitating iterative process testing and improvement. Patient safety events in healthcare settings are categorized using a structured classification system called the Joint Commission Patient Safety Event Taxonomy (Johnson and Sollecito, 2020). It provides a standardized method for reporting and analyzing incidents, close calls, and hazards by methodically organizing these events.
Healthcare companies can track and analyze trends thoroughly by using this taxonomy, which helps them find patterns, underlying causes, and areas for improvement. By offering insightful information that guides targeted interventions and eventually improves patient safety and care quality over time, this methodical approach guarantees ongoing quality improvement. When all of these resources are used together, a strong foundation for continuous quality improvement projects is ensured, which raises the bar for healthcare organizations' standard of care.
