3-2 Milestone Two: Draft of Triggers and Communication
Triggers and Communication
Triggers can be different for everyone and affect individuals in their own unique way. With psychopathy, triggers are often associated with early childhood experiences and genetics. Triggers such as poor parent engagement, punishment focused parenting, abandonment from a parent, and childhood physical abuse or neglect (Tracy, 2021). For Ted Bundy, there a few important events that could be considered triggers for his urge to kill. Finding out the truth about
his mother and his grandparents, physical abuse by his grandfather, the lack of connection to his mother when he thought she was his sister and then the abandonment from his mother as she had more children as he got older. Triggers for sociopaths are not much different from psychopaths, however, environment seems to be the biggest trigger such as domestic violence, sexual and emotional abuse, extreme poverty and rejection (Tracy, 2021).
Risk factors that would be present for Ted and his triggers would be rejection from any female as it would trigger his deeply rooted abandonment wound incurred by his mother. Most of his life he was led to believe that his grandparents were his parents, however upon finding out she had been in the house with him but decided not to be his mother most likely exacerbated the rejection of women. Ironically the first woman that would break his heart, his college sweetheart and all the women he victimized largely favored his mother and/or his ex-girlfriend (Biography, 2014). Ted Bundy graduated with a degree in psychology and that alone would make it more challenging to ask him questions or interrogate him. Because Ted is a psychopath, his most favorite thing to talk about is himself and be the center of attention. However, you must be very
prepared when talking to a psychopath, you must be oriented in the crime scenes, the evidence and all of the knowledge you can obtain from the psychopath’s history. Any flinch of moment they see you may not know something, they will take advantage of that and it will appear to them
as a weakness (Clark, 2014). It would be tricky to navigate keeping him the center of attention while trying to obtain information at the same time, or else he could get bored and decide to stop talking. The best communication skills would have to come with patience, and stroking his ego to
keep him talking. Going back to being very prepared before walking in there with him, you would then appeal to his self-esteem, his intelligence and wit and act impressed by how he was able to off these crimes with such skill (Clark, 2014). Avoid long drawn-out monologues and use
evidence, drawings, photos to keep him engaged. The more the psychopath talks, the more arrogant they become and ultimately so many contradictions will begin to be much more apparent (Clark, 2014).
