Sally’s Inclusion American Public University System 6/18/2023 Evelyn Terzynski
Yes, Sally is getting the consistent inclusion model. Because she is getting the service that she needs in the classroom by being able to get the resources in the classroom. Sally get to spend majority of her day with her general education class but still get the help she needs with her academics that she has in the area of reading comprehension and math reasoning. Sally being able to work with small group with her special education teacher. Tailors teaching for all learners is when you have students that learn differently. But they have different ways to help the student’s learner such as small groups because you have some students like Sally that will help and make it easier setting for her to learn in. When children have disabilities are in a general education classroom with other students this called in inclusion in the special education. In an inclusive classroom, general education teachers and special education teachers work together to meet the needs of students (The Understood Team.) There are many schools that have inclusive classrooms. It’s part of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA.) This law says that students who get special education services should learn in the least restrictive environment (LRE) (The Understood Team.) Meaning there will be able to spend as much time possible with the students who don’t get the special education services. Inclusion benefit are for all students not just those that get special education services. Different researches show the positive short- term and long-term effect that it can have on all the students. Sally’s third grade teacher could alternative instruction format to help her to be able to understand better. Some students need to hear to instruction one on one or having a tool to help them such as ben written so they can see it visually. Sometimes, it’s as simple as using large print or fewer questions on the page to help them process the information (Emily Cummings,2023.) Sally getting this accommodation it will help get far in her education because it can be something that can be on her IEP or 504 service if she has one. Using digital tools for her could be a great way to help Sally with her math, spelling or other subjects. Sally’s teacher could give her a calculator to use when completing her tests or learning math facts. Digital tools can also help with absorbing material and reading (Emily Cummings,2023.) Be able to have the digital tools for her school work will be a big helper also that her teacher can offer her during class. Sally can take breaks during her school work to be another one of her accommodations for school. Some students need breaks in between learning at school. She can have a schedule that she does by during the day and they add the breaks. Students ay need the breaks between assignments or tests. Students might take their test in another room so that their breaks don’t disrupt other students’ test taking (Emily Cummings,2023.) This can also help Sally or other students if they get distracted by classmates who complete their tests or assignment before others at a different speed.
Testing accommodations is another way to help students when they are having trouble with completing tests in a regular classroom setting. Students might have to be taken to a different room to be in small group to minimize distractions and stress that may be caused to the student. They may also take tests with the exam sections in a different order that helps them comprehend the questions in a way that matches their thinking and learning abilities (Emily Cummings,2023.) Some students may need to get extra time for assignments. When students have a disability, it makes it difficult for them to complete a test and assignment at the same amount time. Some students might need that extra time to process the questions and instructions. So, they will give them extra time to there 60 minutes it will be extra 30 minutes to it for the extra time for the students. Sensory Tools is accommodations for students with disability that need sensory tools to help them focus or regulate behavior while in class. All students are different with different disabilities with sensory needs. Different sensory tools they have for students are fidget tools, noise muffling headphones, wiggle cushion, weighted lap pad or vest, or band attached to the chair legs for the student to kick. Having these items can help the students in all different ways so they can get what they need during the time in class they need it. There are many more options to help students self-regulate (Emily Cummings,2023.) When the student has these things to help accommodation them it helps keep them calm and focus. https://www.understood.org/en/articles/4-benefits-of-inclusive-classrooms https://www.behaviorist.com/what-are-accommodations-in-special-education/
