Peer Assessment Form: Mock Diagnostic Interview
INTERVIEWER_FELICITY WATSON FOR ALYSSA THACKE_______________________________
CRITERIA RATINGS COMMENTS
1. Did the interviewer introduce herself/himself?
X
Yes X
No
What strengths or opportunities for improvement did you observe from the interviewer’s introduction? The interviewer said hello but did not say their name. The interviewer was very welcoming, upbeat, and encouraging. They explained the process of the first session, which can help with nerves. The interviewer also shared if Nina is uncomfortable that we can stop and to be open and honest with her. Opportunities for growth: It might be helpful to share your name just as a reminder for the client.
2. Did the interviewer address issues of confidentiality with the client?
X
Yes
No
Describe the content covered in the discussion of confidentiality. Would you have added or omitted anything- why or why not?
She clearly said that the only
people that would have things shared with them is people on the treatment

team. Opportunities for growth: I think clarifying who is on the treatment team would be helpful to remind the client.
3. How thorough was the interviewer’s assessment of the presenting problem?
Very comprehensive

Somewhat comprehensive
Somewhat deficient
Explain to the interviewer what made your assessment
of this criteria to be comprehensive or deficient (e.g. what was clearly present or absent.)
Client explained what the past had looked like with this
situation how long it had gone on etc.
Opportunities for growth. After the client shared lots of
information, the interviewer then asked how long it had been going on. I think client gave lots of information but repeating back to the client some of what they said can help with active listening and
taking notes. I recognize it was a lot, but sometimes if not, it feels to the client like we aren’t listening. If we repeat some information back and say you are just clarifying then it can reassure the client they are listening and just checking for accuracy.

present or absent.)
Client said not going to hurt themselves. Opportunities for growth: I think that the interviewer could’ve clarified a little bit more, but likely due to time and the other responses/body language of the client it wasn’t needed for this initial session.
7. How thorough was the interviewer’s assessment of review of systems and past medical history?
X

Asked about medical history.
Substance use was asked about. No other health concerns. Interviewer asked again more in depth about medical diagnosis or physical diagnosis. Asked if medications are making a difference. Opportunities for growth: It can be hard when a client goes out of order of the list of questions but be flexible with that and go out of order.
I am sure this is something you will achieve with more time and more practice! 8. How thorough was the interviewer’s assessment X

She asked about family history-MH, like this, substance use. Client said that people have been worried before but never to a
point of this or being on meds. Interviewer than stated how this was then likely shocking. Client shared about family’s thoughts and feelings being complicated. Interviewer expressed empathy.
Interviewer asked about support system. Opportunities for growth: Maybe explaining to the client why we want to know about family history.

CRITERIA RATINGS COMMENTS
The interviewer’s assessment was very comprehensive especially for a 10ish minute time and the clients amount of time talking! The client didn’t talk about any stressors, military service, history of abuse, legal problems, or head injury but there were good overviews of questions that touched on that information throughout the assessment. For example, the family dynamic was asked about but not if there was any history of abuse. 11. Which interview techniques did you observe from the interviewer?
X
reflection of feeling

use of use open-ended questions
use of use closed-ended questions
summarization

What techniques do you think the interviewer could add to further improve her/his interviews and why?
The interviewer expressed a lot of empathy and reflecting how something might have made a client feel and open-
ended questions. Opportunities for growth would be to use some more summary questions of what the client has told you before
the end of the session. 12. Which attending skills did you observe from the interviewer?
X
eye contact
acknowledgement of client’s culture/ethnicity and/or gender

I noticed the interviewer be really positive about the client being open to sharing, head nodding, empathizing with the past, clarifying the past information that the interviewer was provided about the client.
Opportunities for growth: I think that exploring the impact of the client’s culture would be
huge. For example, maybe clarifying what substance use means to the clinician because cultures and families have different understandings/beliefs on what “use” is. There also might
be fears sharing that kind of information because of history with law enforcement or the law or what they have seen on the news (good and bad) etc. Did the interviewer summarize the assessment and discuss next steps with the client?
X
Yes
No
Address anything you might add to the discussion of next
steps.
Yes, she talked about therapy weekly and that we can work on talking with caseworker in the future. She spoke about therapy types and what they mean.

definition in the diagnostic manual. Overall, Alyssa did a wonderful job! Even if she didn’t get all the MSE questions answered, due to time, she was able to get a good understanding to assess for safety and develop some rapport.
