Instructions : The individual reflection paper shall address 3 issues: 1) Describe the experience, 2) Examine the experience, and 3) Articulate learning. Students can structure their paper in the way that makes sense to them as long as they address all 3 issues. It is up to students’ discretion to decide if subheadings are needed. 1) Describe the experience o Students shall describe the experience of being a team leader for the group reflection paper objectively and in detail. The following questions provide a starting point. The key is to provide an in-depth description of what you did as a leader, the behaviours in which you engaged, and how your team responded. Where and when did the experience occur? Who was there and was anyone absent? What actions did you/others take? Who did not speak/act? What leadership style did you adopt? How did your teammates react? 2) Examine the experience o Students shall examine the experience of being a leader. The following questions provide a starting point. The key is to reflect deeply on your experiences and to draw connections with teamwork, leadership, decision making, conflict resolution and negotiation concepts/theories learned in the course. How did the experience enhance your understanding of a teamwork, leadership, decision making, conflict resolution and negotiation concept/theory? Did the experience confirm your understanding or challenge of it? Students who are the leaders for group reflection papers #1, #2, and #3 will revise their initial submissions using track changes function by incorporating their reflections on the experience relevant to the chapters that have not been covered when their individual reflection paper is due. For example, the leader for group reflection paper #1 will resubmit their individual reflection paper by reflecting how their experience is relevant to decision making and conflict resolution and negotiation. The revision is due on the same date for those who submit the individual reflection paper as a leader for group reflection paper #4. What was your reaction to the experience? Did you enter the experience with expectations/assumptions about leading and were these confirmed or refuted? What surprised you about the experience of leading and why? 2
What role did each team member play, and could this have been different? 3) Articulate learning o Students shall articulate their learning. The following questions provide a starting point. The key is to summarize what you learned as a result of the experience and reflection and to set goals and future directions for learning that can be applied in subsequent experiences. Note that, the key learning should not be an abstract statement about leadership, such as “Transformational leadership facilitates team cohesion.” What did you learn from the experience of being a leader? What conclusion(s) did you draw about leadership? How could what you learned be valuable to others (e.g., other student leaders) and how could you influence change? In light of what you learned, what goals do you intend to set for yourself for future experience? What are the limitations of your learning/conclusions? Attach all the meeting minutes (detailed transcripts about who said what, where and when the meeting take place, etc) and all evidence demonstrating your leadership (could be group chat, email correspondence, or any other media that documents where the communication about the project take place) in the appendix. Submission format: 1,200 words in length (maximum), not including references and appendix APA (American Psychological Association) format: 12-point font, Times New Roman, double-spaced, 1-inch margins The name of your MS word file must have the following form: COMM227Individualreflectionpaper_your name (e.g., COMM227Individualreflectionpaper_HannaMiller) The file must have a footer with page numbers and name of the student.
