Reflective Journal Entry #1 Date of Activity February 11, 2023 Activity Administration of the Woodcock Johnson IV Tests of Achievement Participants 1. Student- Z.M. 2. Lamar Student Candidate- Lisa Marie Garza 3. Mentor- Lorretta Dalrymple Detailed Summary On Saturday, February 11, 2023 I tested Z.M. a 9 year old in the 3rd grade. I administered the Woodcock Johnson IV Tests of Achievement subtests 1, 2, 4-13, 15, and 17. After administering the assessment I had a brief discussion with my mentor on how the administration went. We talked about which administrations I thought I did well on. We also discussed which subtests I think I needed more practice with. Reflection What was your experience? Feelings? What did you discover? I felt confident in the administration of the assessment except when it came to the administration of the writing subtests. When coming to subtests 6 (Writing Samples) I became worried/ nervous that I would grade the sentence the student wrote either too leniently or too hard. I also didn’t want to spend too much time thinking about whether to mark a 2, 1, or 0 as to not have the student waiting too long on me. The same thing happened when administering and scoring subtests 11 (Sentence Writing Fluency). The only difference that had me a little more relieved was that this particular subtests was timed so I didn’t have to grade the sentences in front of the student in order to determine continuation of the test. In discussing with my mentor I found that those particular subtests are some that are harder to administer due to having to score the responses in order to determine whether to continue
testing additional items. I learned that scoring becomes quicker and easier to determine the more practice you get with the subtest. I also discussed subtest 17A (Synonyms) in determining the basal due to the student missing the first item and not getting the 5 lowest items correct to establish a basal. I'm having some difficulties in this area: I am still having some difficulties in scoring the administration of the writing subtests. In particular subtest 6 (Writing Samples) and subtest 11 (Sentence Writing Fluency). I have tried to improve in this area by: I have tried to improve in my area of difficulty by studying the Examiner’s Manual more to see what constitutes a particular score for sentences written.
