1-1 Discussion: Effectiveness of Visual Communication
Hi everyone! My name is Haley, I currently live in Fort Worth, Texas and work as a part-time bartender and full-time social media manager. I am originally from the East coast; I received my bachelor’s degree from the University of North Florida in Communications. While in Florida, I was able to work with a multitude of companies, which is where I found my love of social media and marketing. My overall goal is to become a college professor and continue my social media consulting business on the side. This course will allow me to develop more skills for both of my preferred careers. To answer the prompt, I am going to use the Ohio Department of Health and a video that was posted to their twitter April 9, 2020. During the COVID-19 pandemic, health officials and other professionals struggled on way to properly communicate with the public about the dangers of the virus and the benefits of social distancing. According to the Washington post, this video is supposed to be a metaphor for how fast the coronavirus was spreading. Having even one person interacting with other can create a chain reaction of devastating consequences (Horton & Bernstein, 2020).

I believe this message was effective in its communication purpose. The content was intended for an online audience. With this video reaching 39.8 thousand retweets and 69.7 thousand likes, it most definitely fits the bill.

audiences? How could the effectiveness of the message collide with ethical practices?
Student Response
Hey Meaghan,
Honestly, I have never cared for Tesla. The self-driving freaks me out. I would be to be scared to take my hands off the wheel, let alone fall asleep. I have to agree with you, it is unethical and unsafe for tesla to have created a self-driving vehicle and promote the sleeping while driving aspect. However, the video you provided does not follow an ethical guideline either. This commercial is not presenting tesla in a good light, which is okay, but the creator are not fully complying with a set of ethical guidelines such as PRSA.

1-1 Discussion: Effectiveness of Visual Communication
Hey Emily,
“The extensive use of humor in advertising occurs for good reasons, and several studies have attested to its positive impact on potential customers, namely by increasing the recipients’ attention, likability of the product, and purchase intention” (Förster & Brantner, 2016). This Busch commercial is completely ethical. They created a commercial that appealed to different type of people. Like you mentioned Busch is an advocate of animal rights and did not create the commercial out of malicious intent.
