INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION AND AWARENESS
1
Part 1
Globalization has facilitated several engagements and activities around the globe. Here, it
becomes essential to note that due to this globalization, the different companies have started to engage in multi-cultural business opportunities which has led to the amalgamation of several cultures as present around the globe. Here, it is significant to underline that, having a cultural competence has become significantly critical as it would contribute towards understanding and respecting the culture of others. Here, it becomes essential to note that, the INCA survey is one such survey which helps in understanding One’s own intercultural awareness and assess the overall cultural sensitivity. The INCA is an acronym which is commonly used for the Intercultural competency Assessment. For this purpose, in this activity we undertook the INCA with the help of which we become considerably aware of our own attitudes towards diversity. The dimensions of the assessment are generally measured by the following aspects:
1) Tolerance of ambiguity
2) Behavioral flexibility
3) Communicative awareness
4) Knowledge discovery
5) Respect for Otherness
6) Empathy

While undertaking this survey, I was rather surprised. Before undertraining this course context, I was not essentially aware of the intercultural awareness concept and had not pondered over this domain. However, through the INCA, I was able to understand that only respecting one’s culture is not enough, instead for effective intercultural communication, it becomes essential that empathy, knowledge discovery as well as tolerance for ambiguity. Is critical.

Critical incidents
The critical incidents as an exercise assist in gaining an overall idea about the understanding of human attitudes, behaviors, expectations, and overall interactions (
Camilleri, 2016)
. They help in understanding the way one should modify one’s behavior to ensure effective outcomes and help in preparation for the workplace, society, and educational context.
The different scenarios which have been chosen are as follows:
2. Samantha and the new job
Pertaining to the given critical incident, it can be rightly understood that the culture which Samantha belonged to was different from the one which was present at the new job. It was
not as if the different employees were partial towards her or did not like to include her. In fact, the primary issue here was the co-workers liked to discuss about work itself (
Hua, 2018)
. However, it is critical to note here that Samantha needs to reflect on Empathy, Respect for others
and behavioral flexibility. Having stated this, it becomes essentially critical to note that, the new job has an individualistic cultural dimension. According to Chen (2017)
, in the individualistic cultural dimension, the individuals generally function on their own without any dependence and reliance on the group is quite less. In addition to this, another cultural dimension which has a key

role to play here is the format of communication which generally tends to take place at the workplace. Here, the formal communication technique is essentially used and pertaining to this, Samantha believes the environment is cold. Guilherme and de Souza (2019)
mentioned that in a job environment, individuals often face issues associated with interpersonal distance and touch and therefore, Samantha should be considerate and reflect empathy and knowledge consideration
about the varying workplace scenarios before making any harsh judgments about the workplace environment.
3. Tim’s employees
In this scenario, the main issue which exists can be identified to be that of conflicting values. In this scenario, it is significant to understand that Tim believes punctuality is a key employee characteristic which all employees must possess, however, it is essential to note that the employee may not believe these values and may consider creativity and productivity as the key characteristics. According to
Jandt (2017), Universalism as well as particularism can be identified to be another cultural dimension which has a key role to play. Here, it is significant to note that, time seeks to function based on universalism, however, Tim’s employee belongs to the particularism phase and might run with the belief that punctuality is not the key aspect of the employment and the creativity and contribution to the workplace and its success is an aspect which must be considered in a significant manner (
Makhmudov, 2020)
.
According to López-Rocha (2016)
, time also has a key role to play in an enterprise. Here,
it is significant to underline that, many individuals in several cultures are not necessarily devoted
towards time and may not belief in punctuality. Tim’s employees appear to be belonging to this aspect as compared to Tim who is rather punctual.

8. Jay’s employee of the month
Jay was surprised to come into his new workplace and find a framed picture of himself entitled "Employee of the month". Jay felt extremely embarrassed and could hardly work that day, especially when clients came into the store and recognized him in the picture. Jay finally ended up going to his manager and asking him to take down the picture. What are the values at Jay's workplace and how are they conflicting with Jay's own values?
The critical issue here is the one which is largely associated with the conflicting values. Here, it is essential to underline that, Jay is rather not comfortable with the appreciation and other appraisals which he has largely received from the related supervisors at work. On the other hand, the working culture of Jay’s organization is rather inclusive and appreciate the work which
is essentially done by the different employees. According to Piller (2017)
, it is largely dependent on the organizational culture and values which guides their decision associated with the appreciation shown to the different employees. Here, the cultural dimensions which must be largely considered can be rightly identified to be space, communication, and interpersonal touch. As Jay is believed to be a restricted individual, he is having issues associated with space in this context. Secondly, with association to the issue associated with the indirect communication, it appears to be critical that Jay is largely suited to the indirect communication whereby the enterprise has portrayed direct communication towards them (
PM Ribeiro, 2016)
. Here, it is essential to underline that when he is being appreciated publicly, it leads to embarrassment. Moreover, jay appears to have an aversion to the interpersonal touch which reflects in his embarrassment to the appreciation he is being given (
Holliday, 2018)
.
