M05 Personal Assessment Reflection
Chapter 6 Reflection:
Summarize your findings–what does the test show/state about your attitude toward sexist language?
The test shows that I have a relatively positive attitude toward addressing sexist language. I agree
that worrying about sexist language is not trivial, and I strongly disagree that teachers who require nonsexist language are forcing their political views. I also show a high willingness to use gender-neutral terms like "server" instead of "waiter" or "waitress" and "firefighter" instead of "fireman."
How do you think your perception and experiences (i.e., if you are female or male) potentially shape your views on this?
As a female, my perceptions and experiences likely influence my views on sexist language. I may be more sensitive to language that excludes or diminishes women, as I have likely encountered such language personally or witnessed its effects on others. This could lead me to be
more proactive in advocating for nonsexist language.
Based on what you learned about in this chapter, what changes do you plan to make using language moving forward?
I plan to continue using nonsexist language and advocate for its use in my interactions and environments. I will also be more mindful of the language I use, ensuring it is inclusive and respectful to all genders. Additionally, I will strive to educate others about the importance of using nonsexist language.
Chapter 7 Reflection:
How satisfied are you with your nonverbal immediacy scale score?
I am somewhat satisfied with my nonverbal immediacy scale score. While I scored high in some areas, such as using gestures and smiling, I also scored low in areas like avoiding eye contact, which I could improve upon.
Why do you think you scored the way you did?
I believe I scored the way I did because I am generally expressive with my hands and face, which is reflected in my high scores for gesturing and smiling. However, I tend to be more reserved in physical proximity and eye contact, which could be due to cultural or personal preferences.
How might your nonverbal communication change as a result of your learning in this chapter?
After learning about nonverbal immediacy behaviors, I will make a conscious effort to improve my eye contact and body language. I will try to maintain better eye contact to convey interest and
involvement in conversations. I will also work on using more vocal variety to make my communication more engaging.
