Ethical Standards
When creating video scripts, unlike press releases, organizations can utilize creativity to create engaging video content. A video script is a blueprint and foundation for a digital video (Hayes, 2022)
. Even though an organization can utilize their creativity, ethics remain to be the most important thing to be utilized. Ethics is the principle of right and wrong, they guide
a person in making decisions (Gordon, 2022). When I think of ethics, my first thought is the Society of Professional Journalist’s (SPJ) code of ethics. The SPJ’s code of conduct instructs journalists to seek the truth and report it, minimize harm, act independently, and be accountable (SPJ, n.d.).
While information appears in various forms, they are no different than the next, whether it is a video script, press release, or infographic. The overall goal is to spread as much factual information in a way the public will understand. With the help of SPJ’s code of ethics, I have determined a few guidelines that may be useful in the creation of my video script:
-
Give the public as much information as possible; they need to know as much as the writer
does
-
Do not change or distort evidence or facts
-
Provide enough background information/context; relay facts about both Snap-on tools and Linn-Benton Community College
-
Do not intentionally mislead or misinform These guidelines will allow me to relay important information regarding the relationship between Linn-Benton Community College and Snap-on Tools Inc.

Metaphor and Hyperbole
Metaphors and hyperboles can be utilized as beneficial tools of influence. A metaphor is a comparison between two things that have no relation (Jenson, 2023). An effect a metaphor can have is to create a connection and empathy among readers (
The effect of a metaphor on your readers,
2019). Hyperboles are figures of speech that are exaggerations (
Hyperbole definition & meaning
n.d.). Both metaphors and hyperboles can be utilized in a persuasive and descriptive way. This allows an audience to form a connection with a person or a piece of information. When creating my video script, I intend on utilizing both metaphors and hyperboles to allow my content to be more relatable to my audience
Responsibility
Communication professionals have a big responsibility when creating content for the public. Not only must they have to accommodate the organization they work for, but they need to
be aware of different audiences whom may see their content in the future. Professionals who outsource their work must be highly aware the people they hire, whether it be video producers or script writers. As stated above, the SPJ code of ethics states professionals must: seek the truth and report it, minimize harm, act independently, and be accountable (SPJ, n.d.). Communication professionals need to establish and maintain trust and respect within their audience and community. All professionals must follow an ethical guideline, such as SPJ code of ethics or Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) code of ethics.
