High or low incidence category ?
•
Students with an intellectual disability are considered to be high incidence. •
High incidence means these students will require more time and attention in some cases and these are considered to be most prevalent with young children who have disabilities.
•
These instances tend to happen frequently.

IDEA eligibility – there are specific assessment requirements needed to qualify for eligibility and those are listed below. •
According to the department of education there are three different needs that need to be met that are very important.

Item of interest – (FAS) Fetal alcohol syndrome •
There have been over 250 causes of intellectual disabilities that have been reported.
•
One known cause for a child to have an intellectual disability is Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) which is 100% preventable. •
Fetal alcohol syndrome occurs in a child that is exposed to alcohol while the mother is pregnant.
•
Causes brain damage and growth problems for the child as well as leaning issues and adaptive behavioral issues.
•
This interested me because the other causes of an intellectual disability are not preventable, however this one is so it was interesting to me how or why some parents or pregnant women would do that to a child knowing the potential outcomes. •
