Topic 3 DQ 1
Why do you suppose collaboration is so highly encouraged in education? Do you have any reservations in
sharing responsibility with others? In your role as a future school leader, how would you build a culture of communication on your campus?
Through research given during education classes, professional development, and other areas we learn that collaboration has benefits. Collaboration has been experienced through many lenses: young learner, educator, and colleague. As a young
learner, I did not appreciate group assignments. I felt that my grade was dependent on someone else and oftentimes I would do more of the work. As an educator, I struggle with the correct recipe for holding all students accountable and facilitating productive outcomes. However, when the recipe is spot on, I witness peers learning together and teaching one another. Working with colleagues, I have experienced both.
Collaboration among my colleagues can produce some amazing programs, curriculum,
etc. Multiple perspectives shared and encouraged benefit our work as educators. However, I have been placed in groups with fellow educators that were not productive and brought back memories of my child learning.
A leader must lead by example and model behaviors that should be carried out by staff and students. As Nedelcu (2013) wrote in his paper about leadership, educational
leaders that do these foster teachers that are committed to professional learning and innovation. Other characteristics shared by Nedelcu (2013) involve facilitating a shared purpose and a reward system. I feel that transparency of goals by leadership, modeling behaviors, and rewarding of goals by staff and students will assist in a culture of open communication. Reservations abound however at creating leaders among staff and not just delegating duties. Additionally, I know that there will be many challenges as personnel do not always mesh with one another.
