Why do you suppose collaboration is so highly encouraged in education? Do you have any reservations in sharing responsibility with others? In your role as a future school leader, how would you build a culture of communication on your campus? South Carolina’s Profile of the South Carolina Graduate states that collaboration and teamwork are part of the World-Class skills that need to be implemented in classrooms (SC Education Oversight Committee, 2015). According to the NEA, (NEA Today, 2024) there are several benefits to teaching students to work together as a team in a collaborative setting. First, it allows students to bounce ideas off each other and develop ideas and plans to solve problems and work creatively. Second, students often learn more easily from other students than they do from teachers. Lastly, it boosts higher-level thinking skills. Students who collaborate have discussions that often lead to higher-order questioning and problem-solving skills. Collaboration is an essential skill in the workplace. Business and industry leaders look for people who can collaborate on tasks well with others. They want people who can be leaders but can also be a part of a team that drives a company to success. The better people collaborate, the more work can be accomplished. Unfortunately, I have had some negative experiences with collaboration. It has led me to complete the task myself instead of sharing the responsibility. My mentor teacher and I have had this discussion several times because we are both similar in this respect. Sometimes it is easier to do something ourselves instead of delegating. Both of us are working on correcting this weakness. In my role as a school leader, I believe the best way to foster collaboration would be to have teachers and staff responsible for various activities and events of the school through committees. Each person would be on a committee that does various activities throughout the year and would be responsible for the implementation of these activities. As the school leader, it would be my responsibility to facilitate the collaboration by putting committee expectations, procedures, and checklists in place and allowing time for committees to meet. In addition, I will need to make sure I am available for any needs from the committees, be transparent with money, and ensure that everything is provided promptly. Finally, I would be a part of the planning process in schools where teachers, administrators, and coaches collaborate to develop a rigorous curriculum that meets the needs of our students and where every voice is heard.
