Reading Guide – 10.27.23
This article is one of very few to provide data on posttraumatic stress symptoms before and after a significant traumatic event such as a campus shooting. Questions:
1. What is the most common trajectory of PTSD symptoms after exposure to a traumatic event and what does this trajectory look like? [1-2 sentences]
High impact-recovery class. It is a dramatic increase in symptoms right after the event and then a similarly drastic decrease in symptoms a couple months after. 2. Why is it important to have data on pre-trauma factors? [1-2 sentences]
For a risk assessment. Understanding the factors can help identify if the person is at a higher risk of doing something negative after a traumatic event.
3. The authors noted that the measure of social support they utilized may not have been ideal. What was the limitation they noted about this measure? [1-2 sentences]
The limitation about this measure was that it did not predict membership of any of the four classes, with results on received social support being mixed.
4. True or false: The lifetime history of the number of traumatic events one has been exposed to is associated with an increased likelihood of meeting criteria for PTSD. 5. What distinguished the minimal impact-resilience class from the other groups? [1-2 sentences]
What distinguished the minimal impact-resilience class from the other groups was that this trajectory has less shooting exposure compared to the other groups, with lower distress outcomes where people were more able to properly regulate their emotions and be clear about the emotions they experienced.
