Article:
INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES TO ENHANCE ALPHABET KNOWLEDGE IN KINDERGARTEN by Linda Stanley and Maida Finch
Describe the professional role and setting of the action researcher who authored the study.
The author of the article Linda Stanley is a Kindergarten teacher at Fruitland Primary School in Maryland who conducted this research. Linda recently just graduated with her master’s in education Curriculum from Salisbury University.
Maida Finch, Ph.D. is an associate professor at Salisbury University in the Department of Doctoral Studies in Literacy, where she teaches classes
on research methods, and quantitative analysis, and literacy theory.
The setting is in a public elementary school in a rural town in mid-Atlanta. The action researcher is responsible for designing and implementing instructional strategies aimed at enhancing alphabet knowledge among kindergarten students. They collected data, analyzed the results, and drawn conclusions based on their findings to improve teaching practices and enhance student learning.
Explain the purpose of the study.
The purpose of the study was to examine the effect of additional teaching strategies to help struggling students learn their letters and sounds.
Identify the problem the action researcher is attempting to address with their study. The problem the action researcher is attempting to address with their study is the lack of alphabet knowledge in kindergarten students.
Describe the population of the study.
The population of the study
were ten kindergarten students who were unable to identify ten or more upper case or lowercase letters during the first week of school.
Identify the research question of the study.
There were two research questions in this study: 1)
“Will the addition of a daily letter book, used in a small group, help students gain letter and sound identification by December; and 2) Will the addition of a letter writing strategy allow the students to better recognize the letter and sound?”
Explain how the study reflects that the area of focus is within the locus of control of the action researcher.
The researcher in this study were specifically interested in investigating the effectiveness of instructional strategies in enhancing alphabet knowledge in kindergarten students. They designed and implemented various instructional strategies and interventions to assess their impact on the students' alphabet knowledge. “Teachers must be flexible and willing to try new instructional strategies to discover what works best with their students. For future research in teaching letters and sounds, I propose that we add the flashcards with picture mnemonics to assist students in having a visual for the letter and sound. I also recommend teachers use many alphabet books as read-aloud during the first weeks of school”. By doing so, the researchers demonstrated that they had control over the implementation and manipulation of the instructional strategies. They were
able to design and modify the strategies according to their research objectives and hypotheses. This indicates that the area of focus, which is enhancing alphabet knowledge, was within their locus of control as action researchers.
