2 CONFLICT IN TELEVISION Conflict in Television Conflict is very common and is something many people face daily. According to Bevan (2020), conflict is a struggle between at least two individuals who distinguish irreconcilable issues that interfere with achieving a goal. A conflict between people can be so small as choosing where to eat dinner or something as big as choosing where to live. This paper will discuss conflict and how to overcome it. Conflict is all-around people. No matter where a person turns, there is some form of conflict. Some conflicts are even displayed on the television. For example, on the television show "Black-ish," a major conflict was displayed between the parents on the show. In season four, episode twenty, Andre Johnson (Anthony Anderson) and his wife, Rainbow Johnson (Tracee Ellis Ross), have an argument that leads to conflict between the two. The argument involved their one-year-old son Devante Johnson (August and Berlin Gross), not walking at his age. Andre is worried that something is wrong with Devante because he has not started walking. Rainbow insists that Devante is fine, and he will eventually start walking on his own when he is ready. Andre believes otherwise. This disagreement causes a conflict between the two. The conflict between Andre and Rainbow meets the criteria for an interpersonal conflict. The conflict style that is depicted in this episode is the compromise conflict style. According to Bevan (2020), a compromise conflict style is when the individuals work together to create a fair solution. In that episode, despite Andre's beliefs, he and Rainbow try to compromise and move to pass the conflict they were having. They both decide to let go of the fact that Devante is not walking yet and give him more time. Because of their interaction with each other, Rainbow and Andre's argument meets the criteria for interpersonal conflict.
3 CONFLICT IN TELEVISION The conflict between Rainbow and Andre was not handled effectively. Despite saying, he would let the situation go, deep down, Andre did not. He began to talk to several people behind Rainbow's back which upset her. Instead of holding how he felt in, Andre should have released his feelings and compromised with Rainbow. Not compromising and holding his true feelings in caused Andre to become angry with Rainbow about Devante. This caused the couple to have a series of arguments that always ended up back on the topic of Devante. The arguments they had are called a serial argument. According to Bevan (2020), a serial argument is when a conflict reoccurs over time without a resolution. Because Andre was upset from the conflict, he caused a serial argument which depicts why the conflict was not handled effectively. In the episode, Andre and Rainbow used strategies to address the conflict they have. One of the strategies is expressing your thoughts and emotions constructively. According to Bevan (2020), expressing your thoughts and emotions constructively can help assist in accomplishing shared meaning. Andre and Rainbow both expressed how they felt about the conflict. Another strategy they used is using "I" statements. According to Bevan (2020), using "I" statements helps with responsibility. Andre and Rainbow both took responsibility for their role in the conflict when they were trying to resolve it. Some strategies could have been used to resolve the conflict. One strategy is determining the appropriate time and place to express your thought and emotions. According to Bevan (2020), expressing your thoughts and emotions at the appropriate time reduces your emotions from building up and festering over time. Andre did not pick an appropriate time to discuss his emotions when he argues with Rainbow at Devante's birthday party. Another strategy that can be used in improving your conflict management skills. According to Bevan (2020), improving your conflict management skills can encourage positive emotions and strengthen your interpersonal communication skills. During their conflict, Andre
