2 Noise Interference and Communication Noise Interference with Basic Principles of Competent Communication Communication is an important outlet used in our day-to-day life. Clear communication is essential when conversing with someone. For this week's assignment, the main focus is a video called "A Failure to Communicate." In this video two women struggle to communicate with distractions all around them. In this paper, identifying miscommunication, two basic principles of effective interpersonal communication, and ways to overcome when miscommunication arises will be discussed. During the video there were several instances of miscommunication. The first instance of miscommunication noticed is when the woman asked for help from a young lady nearby. When the young lady did not answer, the woman proceeded to yell at the young lady only to find out that she is deaf. The next instance of miscommunication came when the young lady pulled out her device that translates what she wants to say. As the woman watch the young lady type on her device, she became confused. She did not understand what the young lady was doing. Another instance of miscommunication came when the woman began to talk into the young lady's device to understand her. As she began to talk, a train blowing its horn passed by, resulting in the device not picking up what the woman is saying. The first basic principle of effective interpersonal communication is to respect others as well as self. According to Bevan (2020), individuals should respect themselves and other individual's feelings, traditions, beliefs, and values. Persons should have regard and appreciation for these boundaries. In the video the woman did not exemplify this principle. When the young lady did not answer her when she asked for help, she became hostile, grabbing the young lady by the arm to get her attention as she spoke aggressively. She did not respect the young lady's feelings. The following basic principle is to listen and evaluate the other person's statements
3 Noise Interference and Communication before responding. According to Bevan (2020), being able to listen is an essential principle. Listening is a crucial element in communicating. Despite distractions of noise, both women tried their best to listen to each other. The noise distraction got in the way of their communication. One of the forms of noise depicted in the video is the physical noise. According to Bevan (2020), physical noise is a distraction from the environment around the individuals. In the video there were several forms of physical noise. The first noise distraction is the train passing by blowing its horn. The following noise distraction is the announcer speaking on the intercom. Both of these noise distractions prevented the women from understanding each other. They both were interrupted, which caused miscommunication. Noise can be overcome in situations like this. Based on Bevan (2020), noise can be overcome by asking for clarification. Asking for clarification can spark a notion to get a clear understanding of what is missed. Communication is an important aspect of an individual's life. Practicing communication skills and utilizing the basic principles of competent communication can help with miscommunication. Clarification is one way to clear up any miscommunication that occurs because of noise. In the end, having clear communication is essential to a conversation.
