CULTURE AND COMMUNICATION 2 Culture and Communication Culture is the way of life for different groups of people. There are many different cultures all around the world. Based on Bevan (2020), culture is a particular set of traditions, beliefs, values, and norms or standards of behavior passed down by generations. Cultures have a significant influence on communication. Many people use their culture to communicate in many different ways. For this week's assignment, we will discuss cultures and communication. Culture is so critical to many people. Being aware of culture while communicating is essential. One reason it is essential to be aware of culture when thinking about communication is negative perceptions. Judgment can be passed so quickly when individuals lack information about another individual's culture. Before communicating, it is necessary to gain knowledge of the culture to avoid any misconceptions. There are ways a person can avoid any negative perceptions. According to Bevan (2020), to avoid any negative perceptions, a person can change preconceptions by accepting and acknowledging the difference between vultures. Efforts like such can prevent negativity between cultures. Another reason it is vital to be aware of culture when thinking about communication is to understand your own culture as well as other cultures. It is essential to know your own culture before understanding someone else's culture. Knowing their own culture can help individuals deliver and receive messages appropriately to others. After gaining knowledge of your own culture, it is crucial to understand other cultures. Engage and communicate with different cultures to explore behaviors and get a clear understanding of what is appropriate to each other. According to Bevan (2020), people should gain more knowledge about which behaviors and messages are appropriate and influential within the context of a culture that differs from the next.

CULTURE AND COMMUNICATION 3 Understanding your own culture as well as someone else's culture is essential when communicating. Culture shapes verbal and nonverbal communication in so many ways. Verbal communication is how many people pass down their cultures. Bevan (2020) states that verbal communication uses language to accomplish different goals like expressing imagination and creativity, an abstraction of reality, sustain and transmit culture, and confirming and disconfirming messages. Verbal communication is one of the main ways people pass down traditions through their culture. Many people use different languages to depict their culture. Nonverbal communication helps people get the message across without using words. When words are sometimes not enough, nonverbal communication can be used to ensure the message is clear. Many people use nonverbal communication to pass down their traditions as well. According to Bevan (2020), nonverbal communication manages impressions and identities, managing and interpreting relationships, regulating interactions, and detecting messages of emotion, influence, and deception. Nonverbal communication can help individuals understand the culture of others through symbols, pictures, gestures, and body language. Identifying verbal and nonverbal communication has shaped culture in a significant way. Gender is a very controversial topic. Tons and tons of traditions label certain cultures for women and some for men. In many cultures, the value of women and men is based on what that gender can achieve. According to Bevan (2020), in masculine countries, assertiveness and materialism are achievements for men, and in more feminine countries nurturing behaviors, interdependence with others, and sexual equality are achievements for women. Culturally, based on gender, men and women have specific roles and duties they have to abide by. A perceptual filter is a mental structure of how people assign and organize new information. CULTURE AND COMMUNICATION 4 can affect the way people view cultures. According to Bevan (2020), people are not likely aware that the way they think is influenced by culture. By managing their thoughts, an individual can break perceptual filters they have for cultures. Changing its thought can help individuals be more open to cultures. Paying attention to culture can help people improve as communicators. Verbal and nonverbal communication is one way of communicating through a culture that forces people to communicate with each other. With all the different ways to communicate, there are numerous ways for people to understand and learn about each other's culture. By doing so, it can help people become aware and accept cultures that are not their own. Culture gives people the opportunity to teach other people their way of life. Culture improves communication with people throughout the world. Culture is a way of life for many people. Traditions and norms are passed down through generations through cultures. There are many different cultures all around the world. These cultures are passed down through communication. Without communication, it would be challenging to converse and learn from each other.
