Explain the effect of successful teacher collaboration on student instruction. Include examples of what
this teacher collaboration would look like. Conversely, describe the potential challenges that may exist
when working in isolation from peers at your grade level or department. How does the Christian world view apply to this concept of collaboration?
Teacher collaboration is important for student instruction. At my school, we try to plan for
the quarter for 4 hours before the quarter starts, and twice a month during our team time. In our district, we are paid additional if we are planning after contractual hours with our team. According to Bouchrika (2022), one way to be an effective educator is to have common planning time with other teachers. We plan by looking at our learning targets and how we will differentiate and align on how we will assess and enter data into our gradebook. We teachers plan together it will help increase academic effort, understand student data, have a different perspective on lesson plans, and prevent teacher isolation (How to Approach Teacher Collaboration in Today's Classrooms, 2022). In our building, we have time to collaborate on engagement strategies to help improve academic success within our grade level and have them prepared for the next grade or state assessments.
Lately, our planning has been interrupted by last-minute professional development that was
missed because we are focusing as a district on LETRs to help improve reading fluency, comprehension, and writing numbers. When this happens, we try to meet off contractual hours but family and other issues arise to where we are starting to plan on our own. When this happens, we have conflicting information for our grades, and the newer teachers feel behind because they are not fully understanding the goals for 2nd grade.
I thought of the following scripture regarding teachers collaborating: Proverbs 27:17 ESV "
Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another." I think that collaboration works well for all involved. You can have veteran teachers sharing strategies that they have seen work for years while new teachers can share strategies and techniques with technology.
