Dear Mrs. Scott, I am taking the time today to reach out to you and express how thankful we are to have you as Remington’s teacher this year. The past two years of school have been rough for him with his speech impairment, and you changed our view on teachers and the school system this year. You have helped him so much with his disability and are always around if he needs help. You also are a big influence in us getting him into speech therapy. Remington’s success this year is because of your commitment to helping him through his struggles and your dedication to making your classroom a safe space for all your students. At the beginning of the year, Remington expressed to us his nervousness and dislike for the new school year. He had always felt like a kid with no friends and was not very smart. Although he has had good teachers in the past, none of them ever listened and took time out of their normal routine to assist him with his disability. He was always expected to learn the same way other students did. He is insecure about his speech because some kids have made fun of him in the past, but you made sure to welcome him with open arms, and all of your students this year have done the same for him. Remington comes home now with a smile on his face and has even made a few friends this year. I recently had a meeting with Mrs. Jones as well as his speech therapist, Ms. Sawyer. They both have seen major improvements in his grades and his speech since the beginning of the year. Mrs. Jones said he is on track with his IEP and is not falling behind anymore! His behavior has also improved. We couldn’t ask for anyone better to guide our son and help him achieve all of his goals. Thank you again, so much, and we will sure miss you next year!
With Thanks, Allison Bowman Minnesota Standards According to Minnesota Statue 120B.021, the academic standards for language arts, mathematics, and science apply to all public school students, except the few students with extreme cognitive and physical impairments. Students with these impairments will have an IEP, or individualized education program, to establish alternative standards. Due to Remington’s speech impairment, being given an IEP will support his future education and lead him to be able to graduate. While still learning the core curriculum and school standards, he will be able to learn in an alternative way that is easier for him to comprehend. This is a great example of how students with disabilities are still able to succeed and meet graduation standards.
