Compare the vocal styles of Patti Page and Muddy Waters.
Patti Page- smooth, calm, has a soothing tone, variation in speeds of the song, vibrato is used in the song,
long pitches, instances of big band and jazz
Muddy Waters- has a swinging melody, mellow warmth in the song, there is a grittiness to it, sporadic in
volume, choppy tone

What is Muddy Waters singing about?
The song is about a cheating lover and the guy carries his gun so she doesn’t cheat, getting revenge on the
other guy his lover cheated on him with.

Its similar to the previous songs by having an A-A-B pattern
What pattern do you hear in the lyrics of Patti Page’s Tennessee Waltz?
Patti page has a similar story of love and loss but the lyrics are more prim and proper. It has a more reverse
chorus.
There is a story in both of these songs; however, the stories are communicated in considerably different ways.
What are these differences?
Patti Page’s has a more prim and proper tone of her lover being stolen from her while B.B King’s is more of a
strong emotional cry for her lover to come back to him despite cheating on her.

It is the same A-A-B pattern with a more harmonic pattern
Would you classify this song as a country and western song or a blues song? Write a paragraph in support of
your answer.
I would classify this as a mixture of both. The sound in the song is the A-A-B pattern that comes from the
blues. The content of the song has a dash of the content in the frontier and this more joking way of the two
cultures. The guitar is supportive, similar to the blues. The yodel comes from the older european style of music.
Part IV: Economics and Music
Whether we like it or not the economic factors had a considerable role in shaping the development of rock and
roll and popular music, more generally. What sorts of economic factors were at play prior to 1950 and how did
they shape the kinds of music that were created and distributed in the mainstream? Hint: What was the base
commodity in the music industry at that time?
The economic factors at the time was that the economy was growing by 37%. It was considered a
golden age at the time which affected the music industry at the time by allowing a vast majority of people to go
and see concerts in the cities. It gave way to blues and shaped the A-A-B pattern.
What kinds of economic factors are at play in the world of popular music today? How do they shape the kinds
of music that are created and distributed in the mainstream? Hint: What do you think is the base commodity in
the music industry today?
Economic factors that influence music today are the concept of streaming music with services like
apple music, spotify, and others. They shape the music through different types of artists listening to each other
and inspiring each other in different ways too.
