The exceptionality that I chose is Speech and/or Language impairments. These impairments make it difficult for children to create or form the correct words or sounds needed to communicate. I chose this exceptionality because my 2-year-old struggles with speech impairment. He has a tongue tie, making it difficult to say certain sounds and letters. Let’s say a student in my class has a speech impairment. Some benefits for the students would be enhancing their communication skills with their peers and watching other students’ speeches. Unfortunately, speech impairments come with many challenges for children. Reading, writing, and speaking in front of a classroom is a huge challenge for these students. Another challenge for these students is that other students do not accept them. Children can be hateful, and any other child with an impairment suffers from bullying. You may identify problematic social dynamics and hear comments and questions about disabilities that reflect commonly held fears and stereotypes. (Ramsey, p.165). I think for families, the benefits of their child learning in an inclusive setting would be that they are having a lot of interaction that may help them. I think a challenge for families with an exceptional child is the fear of them not learning or believing in themselves at school. As a mom of a son with this exceptionality, I know that is my biggest fear. Two students with the same exceptionality may have different learning styles. One student with an articulation disorder may require time with a school speech pathologist, while another student with a voice disorder would need just some one-on-one
time with a teacher. Student #1 may learn better with individual work, while student #2 learns better through visual aids and auditory communication from the teacher. As a
teacher, it is our responsibility to adapt to each students exceptionality and teach them in the way they will learn best.
