Self-Reflection Essay Destiny Smith UNV-104 Dr. Cox May 27, 2023
This class has been great, and I have been taught and I have learned so much. I really love that I got to know the writing process well and have learned how to write essays a lot more proficiently than I used to. I really appreciate that I learned more about effective communication and how to apply it to my future. Effective communication does not come easy to everyone. We are not born with knowing how to listen and communicate. Effective listening is a skill that must be developed (Carnegie, 2019). When you genuinely listen to what someone else is saying—not just what they have to say, but the complete context of the conversation—you establish a bond with that individual. The connection could last 5 minutes or 50 years. The truth is that communication either builds or kills connections (Carnegie, 2019). My field of study is nursing so that I can become a labor and delivery nurse. As far as effective communication in my field of study and this class I will apply the knowledge I have learned in this class, the strengths in communication that I can bring to it, as well as opportunities that I can work on regarding communication in my nursing field of study. I can apply the knowledge learned in this course toward effective communication by always being professional in my words as well as my actions and body language. I learned in this course that the way that effective communication can be demonstrated in my words by not using vulgar language or talking badly about anyone. Being thorough and precise when speaking to people is essential for effective communication because in my field of study as a nurse I will be talking to doctors and patients as well as other nurses. I also learned from one of my classmates that our actions, body language, and facial expressions are a type of way that we communicate and that becoming a nurse I will apply this by always being positive and engaged in eye contact and a smile or a positive facial expression and body stance. Areas of strength in communication that I can bring with me into becoming a labor and delivery nurse is my confidence when I am speaking. I mostly always speak with confidence to know and sound like I understand and that I really do know what I am saying. Another
communication strength that I will bring is my ability to relate to others and empathize with them, I can do this with my patients by being there for them and listening to them so that they can know that I hear and understand what they are saying and may be going through. There are a few areas of opportunity for me that I can work on regarding communication within going into nursing. One of the areas that I can work on is my body language because sometimes I slouch and do not look like I am listening or interested in what someone is saying, this is important for me to develop ways to fix this because I want people to see that I am listening and that I am interested in what they are saying. Another area of opportunity that I can work on in regard to communication in my field of study is making sure my delivery of what I am saying is clear because sometimes when I am saying things it gets misinterpreted and this is important for me to work on because if what I say and mean is misunderstood and unclear then someone could mess up something really bad and if it is with a patient than that life could be in danger. I need to also work on not saying “um” and “uh” and this is important because I need to sound more confident and know what I am talking about (Barot, 2022). Effective communication has many different aspects, and it is very important that we all learn how to communicate well with others. I have been realizing that the more that I learn about effective communication, I have seen how critical it is to know how to communicate well and effectively. Many lives will be in my hands, and it can come down to one miscommunicated thing. As far as effective communication in my field of study as becoming a nurse, I will apply the knowledge I have learned in this class, bring my strengths of effective communication, and develop and strengthen new ways to help me communicate even more effectively.
