M02 Reflection
Chapter 5, Option C
Today, my girlfriend and I argued against my having to call off work tomorrow for therapy because My stress level has been high, and I wanted to have a day to call off. She perceives my actions as lazy. She thinks this because I tried to call off last Saturday. I wasn’t able to because my manager wouldn’t allow it. Our heated discussion led to her leaving the apartment we shared. Not to mention, she’s four
weeks pregnant. When looking back at our conversation, one common tendency is to Make Snap Judgments. (
Adler et al., (2020)
When she got upset, I assumed she thought I was lazy. Because of the snap judgment I made, our bickering persisted. Also another common perception of ours when communicating is that our expectations of each other influence us. My girlfriend has expectations for me, such as working a full-time job in order to provide for our child on the way. I’ve explained to her many times that it’s challenging for me to do that while attending college.
My expectation of her to be highly supportive of my dreams and aspirations in life
also caused interpersonal communication issues. Chapter 5 made me realize a lot about myself. I learned that my tendency to make snap judgments stems from the implicit bias I may hold towards her. Because she called me lazy in the past from a conversation similar to this one, I assumed she thought I was Lazy. This is an excellent example of how people tend to cling to first impressions when perceiving one another. (Adler et al., 2020) Some steps I
could take in the future would be perception-checking to ensure that I read the situation from other perspectives aside from my own and show more empathy. Word Count - 294 Words
