Case Study 4 2 Alex is a six-year-old boy who was diagnosed with autism. Alex’s parents noticed his language skills progressing at the same pace his twin brother was. His parents noticed a decline in Alex’s sleeping and eating patterns shortly after noticing the delay in skills. Alex began receiving special education services with a focus on communication and social skills with his family’s involvement as well. Alex gets help for one hour a day targeting his communication skills with Ms. Dunn. He has made slow but steady progress. Why do you think Alex was diagnosed with autism and not Asperger syndrome? Alex was diagnosed with autism when he was just three years old, which is the age range that evident signs of autism start to show. Although some signs of autism are very similar to Asperger syndrome, individuals with Asperger syndrome have average to above average intelligence and they do not have the same communication impairments that many with autism do have. What social, communication, behavioral, and cognitive characteristics, if any did or does Alex display that are consistent with autism? One of the most common signs of autism is difficulty with social interactions. When Alex was a child, he did not like to be touched or veered away from physical interaction. Alex likes to play alone and has his own interests. Communication skills are quite common in individuals with autism as well. Alex struggles with developing sentences and speaks in three-word phrases which can be harmful and difficult towards social interactions as well. Alex has certain behavioral characteristics like playing alone and becoming fixated on one thing at a time. What behaviors did Alex’s parents notice that led to the ultimate diagnosis of autism?
Case Study 4 3 Some of the behaviors that Alex’s parents noticed that led to the ultimate diagnosis of autism is sustained odd play, severe language deficits, difficulty expressing needs, did not like physical touch, and becoming fixated on certain things. Do you think Alex will be successful in school? What variables in his educational history lead you to this prediction? Yes, I think that Alex will be successful in school because even though he has come across struggles and difficulties with certain tasks, he has been making steady progress with the help he is receiving now even if it is slow progress. That way, we know that he is improving and getting the help he needs to grow and succeed. Could Alex be included in a general education class? If yes, full or part time? What would be the benefits for Alex? Why or why not? Yes, Alex could be in a general education class part time. I think this would benefit Alex in the social aspect of his struggles. He will still get the feeling of being involved with his peers and not making him feel outcasted but still getting the help that he needs by being pulled out. I think Alex will thrive in a general classroom setting if he has push-in help to come in the classroom with him to help him along the way as well as getting pulled out for his usual help.
