Discuss the process you currently use when writing a paper, including the following:
How do you start preparing to do research? Will you highlight, take notes, etc.?
Do you use an academic outline or concept mapping? Why or why not?
How does your research and writing process relate to the writing process discussed in this module, your readings, experience, and discussion with classmates?
How will you develop and improve your writing process?
When I write my research papers, I begin my research preparation by looking at the resources, objectives, academic standards, and questions to try and familiarize myself with the subject matter. When I read the text I will often highlight and take notes on key points. My next step is to
structure the work. I do a basic outline of the main sections and critical points by organizing the information. I have tried concept mapping, but an outline helps maintain a structured flow throughout the paper. Plus, concept mapping does not work for my brain with paper. I try to tie my concepts discussed in the modules and reading to ensure my approach aligns with the academic standards by emphasizing evidence-based arguments and using proper citations. To improve my writing process, I have requested feedback from a colleague or my dad (because he is also a teacher). Getting feedback does aid in recognizing areas of improvement. Time management is an additional step I use by allocating specific research, drafting, revising, and editing to ensure a well-structured paper. By incorporating these strategies and being receptive to
feedback, I can continually evaluate and refine my writing process, enhancing the quality and effectiveness of my writing.
