a. How will the relational stance enhance your abilities to use self-reflection and self- regulation, as well as to engage and work with diverse, multi-stressed families? Cite the readings.  Relational stance is an approach therapist can use to connect with their clients. “A relational stance of an appreciative ally is characterized by a spirit of respect, connection, curiosity, and hope,” (Madsen, 2007, p. 22) . This stance will help me be able to connect with my clients and show empathy for what they are going through. It will also help to remind me that I am there to support and guide them not tell them what they need to do. b. What evidence of this technique is shown in the video? Be specific. One of the biggest pieces of evidence of this technique was the genogram. A genogram pays attention to what relationships a person has had in their past and present. Another example of this technique was when they discussed that therapist should be mindful of how they speak and the language they use. Another example was when the therapist was careful with what they said and tried to play a neutral role in the session. (Gladding , 2012) c. How does the relational stance relate to the NASW Code of Ethics and advance human rights? Use citations and identify specific codes within the Code of Ethics. 1.1 Commitment to Clients: Social Workers’ primary responsibility is to promote the well- being of clients. (NASW Code of Ethics: Ethical Standards , 2021) 1.2 Self Determination : Social Workers respect and promote the right of clients to self- determination and assist clients in their efforts to identify and clarify their goals. (NASW Code of Ethics: Ethical Standards , 2021) 1.05 Cultural Competence : Social workers should demonstrate awareness and cultural humility by engaging in critical self-reflection (understanding their own bias and engaging in self- correction), recognizing clients as experts of their own culture, committing to lifelong learning, and holding institutions accountable for advancing cultural humility.
