For the initial post, share with the class a time when you had to address (or were involved with) conflict in a work setting. Then, address the following, using the provided headings to format your post:
Conflict Setting
o
Describe the setting, the people involved, the emotions experienced, and the outcome.
I was involved in a conflict at work when I helped a coworker call a Spanish-speaking parent. This situation consists of the school AP, a coworker, and me. The coworker failed to take a student to the clinic when he fell on the playground during recess. The parents should have been informed about the situation as well. She told me of the situation after school ended. I asked her if she had called the parents, and she said, "No. " I had to report the situation because the student was in a special aid class. Our AP directed her to bring the students to the clinic and call the parents alongside me whenever this occurs. The setting was the school clinic. I contacted the student's parents to let them know what had happened and told them to expect the student to come home with a scratch. The student's mom had trouble hearing me because I had her on speaker, so I removed the speaker. The mom understood the situation well. After I relayed what the student's mother had said, the coworker responded with a high-pitched and aggressive voice, asking, "Why did you take her off the speaker?" She repeated this several times. I was shocked and thought that she was joking at first, then I tried to explain to her the reasons why I had to take the mother off speaker. She didn't understand and said, "How would she know I had said what happened in the playground and not blamed her for something else?". She added, 'To ensure the right information is passed on, two Spanish speakers must be present during a call like
this." I was highly offended at this point because I had to translate many meetings and phone
calls for all the school APs, including the principal. I have never been criticized for not translating correctly. I raised my voice tone and left the clinic to ask an assistant principal for assistance in solving the situation. Although the AP attempted to calm us down, they did not support either party, which upset me because I knew I had not done anything wrong. I opted to leave the clinic, leaving both individuals conversing. As I sat in the front office, I began to cry immediately because I was very frustrated and had a lot of adrenaline. My tears lasted for two days. I felt drained and overwhelmed due to the emotional impact of the conflict, which weighed heavily on me.
Insight
o
Provide insight into how the situation could have been handled better by referencing the textbook and an outside source.
I could handle it better by applying the strategy of openness. Listening to my coworker with empathy and attempted to comprehend her emotions. The AP called her out for not following protocol when the student fell. The book states that “our perspective makes a difference in how we act and react.” I also believe that the authority figures in this conflict fail to apply the strategy
of figuring out where things went wrong. HappyPlace states, "The supervisors must review all the activities that occurred during the conflict. Getting information from witnesses and reviewing
any evidence," which they never did, even though other coworkers express that they have heard the coworker yelling at me from other rooms. References
